    Today in History

Dec. 11, 1941, Germany and Italy declare war on the United States. And in 1972, Apollo 17 landed on the moon--the last such mission. Today, we have a surrogate human on Mars, and there's a Tesla roadster sailing by overhead while it digs for goodies. Edit to add: And the Voyager probe has...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

George Herbert Walker Bush, 41st President of the United States, has died at age 94. He had a remarkable record of heroism in WWII, and is one of only two presidential fathers who also saw his son rise to the presidency.

The Birds & The Bees, how did you find out?

I heard her speak in person last year, and she was wonderful. The great thing is that beyond all the nifty backstory, she always has a remarkable, intelligent, relentlessly inclusive and well-grounded message. Her other two bestsellers are marvelous, and I do. not. read. churchy. books.

The Birds & The Bees, how did you find out?

I'm very much looking forward to reading Nadia Bolz-Weber's third book, "Shameless: A Sexual Reformation," due out in January. The heavily tattoo'd Lutheran pastor is expected to delve into the ways in which the church has messed people up through sexual control, labeling, guilt and...

The Birds & The Bees, how did you find out?

I got it in detail from a well-illustrated book that somehow slipped past the school librarian in about third grade. We were allowed to choose books from the library to read aloud to the class, and I picked that one. No one did any pre-checking before we rose to begin, so there were lots of...

    Face soap for a man

I've liked Kirk's as well, and at times Pears soap, which is a very old glycerine based brand. Right now I just use Ivory because cheap. (Housekeeping note: This has been moved to Front Parlor as the Beauty forum is ladies only)

    Vintage Firearms

I've learned that my wife's grandfather left her a revolver in his will, which she has yet to retrieve from relatives. I'm not sure, but from the single photo we have of it, it looks to be a long barrel S&W 45, a pretty desirable revolver. We spent some time at the range this week, and it will...

    Vintage Firearms

Having recently bought a modern 38 special revolver for range shooting, I can see how a person can get going as a collector pretty quickly. I'm searching Google images for old S&W models rather obsessively. Who collects pre 50's firearms? Holsters/cases?

Sears might be going belly up

Fingerhut seems to be doing the Sears model successfully, to judge by the thick holiday Big Book we got in the mail last week. Looks the same as the old Sears catalogue. Toys, clothes, electronics, games, household goods, etc.
