Got one coming from Bob this week. 100% beaver in natural. Size 7-1/2 LO, 3" brim x 6" crown on 52 block, 1/2" ribbon, 1/4" bound. I'll post it creased after it arrives.
The same type stitch was used to secure the liner in days of old. I don't mind stitches on the outside, as they are always hidden by a properly attached band. The method you are describing is time consuming and not as durable, as it can be too shallow in placed and tear though the felt.
That looks like a skip stitch as opposd to a common loop or cross stitch. I use a curved needle. If you look closely you may see some of the original stitches peaking through on the outside as I have seen in the type or stitch. Ive tried it and found it difficult to keep the stitch completely...
They will lose their shape when worn regularly in wet weather but the felt (Heritage in this case) will take multiple re-blockings with no adverse effects. This ones 5 years old.
