The Open Road Guild
The same type stitch was used to secure the liner in days of old. I don't mind stitches on the outside, as they are always hidden by a properly attached band. The method you are describing is time consuming and not as durable, as it can be too shallow in placed and tear though the felt. -

That looks like a skip stitch as opposd to a common loop or cross stitch. I use a curved needle. If you look closely you may see some of the original stitches peaking through on the outside as I have seen in the type or stitch. Ive tried it and found it difficult to keep the stitch completely... -
More Akubra advice please
They will lose their shape when worn regularly in wet weather but the felt (Heritage in this case) will take multiple re-blockings with no adverse effects. This ones 5 years old. Before After -

Cordovan steer vs Cordovan FQHH... and tumbling.
I have a cordovan LHB in FQHH, which I've had for a few years, and a brown Teamster in steer. I have never had any bleeding problems.
