Some years ago were common here some companies who specialized in "finding" old school friends... An expensive task. By facebook we could do a meeting (and find ourselves again) in a easier and cheaper way. For this I'm very happy about facebook!
Last year I got some articles by Mencken - just loved his writing and polemics. Looking around for a translation of more (and this American Language too!), but still didn't find. I think I will have to try to read in English, anyway...
The 60s and 70s were times of big changes in historical vision... Like this one you put about Columbus. Some are very interesting, specially when the teachers wanted to discuss the facts. Sad that a lot usually just got a "socialist" vision about history, and I saw much more about...
Very interesting thread!
This is a brazilian cheese. Very traditional... Since the 10s with the same packaging. And, as far as I can remember, the same taste (very very good!)
An interesting orchestra - never heard before, liked a lot. Lucky Millinder.

We can find more people using hats than 10 years ago - everyday I see 2 or 3 guys with fedoras. But is impossible to say this is a "resurgence" of hats. Here, at least, hats are strongely associated with old men.
"The Bureau", by Ronald Kessler. The story of FBI. Very interesting - just a little hard to me to read in English (I need always to have a dictionary near me). But Edgar Hoover always intrigued me, so it's a lecture I'm enjoying a lot.
Very good point.
I know a lot of people on motorcycle clubs - almost all in their 40s/50s, like to look as Hell's Angels, with BIG motorcycles, symbols and so on. Almost all with Harley Davison. They love the "fighting the system" look of "bad boys". And so many there you could say "you're...
:eusa_doh: Well, I said "CAUTION"!!! :D
One LP from Stan Kenton make you believe that this "song" doesn't exist - if you listen twice each side, you can think that ever the pop music is really good.
I do this way. ;)
Now you surprised me, Chas!
As I live in Latin America, all music here would be... Latin music Well, it has a different "sound" than music from Mexico, Argentine, Paraguay and so on - in this sense, you're right. Anyway... I confess I never cared much about these definitons! :D...
Two records by one of the most popular singers in Brazil in late 30s, Mr Orlando Silva. Both records with the studio orchestra from Victor. Both songs give a good look into what was the usual "popular music" here in those days.

That's my biggest problem, Doug. The efect light is always too soft (and too strong). Do you have any idea how I can make this light harder without a spotlight? I'm using an open reflector.
The best I got in the " noir feeling" wasn't very good as photography. I used a slide projector as...
This kind of clothing, TheBronze?

(murder of Albert Anastasia, 1957 - photo by LIFE magazine).
I wish you a lot of luck in the new assignment!
Thanks, Paul! Glad you liked. Maybe the 1th and 3th photos have this look because the clothes?
Anyway, I'm still starting with this kind of lighting. They make a big fuzz in my home, and then I'm going slow about this...

Kathy, this list would be very very large... And probably a lot of good things would be missing!
You could start with Cole Porter and Gershwin - and just this will give you several days of work! (happilly will be a funny and happy thing to do!) Or start with any well-known orchestra, like...
After looking around IBM's site to get the Selectric photo, I've found this:

The ad about the electric typewriter is charming, but the typist cought my attention (a profession that I would like to see back). And NOT...
Exactly.
We had one of this model:
A very different and efficient system. At those days (80s) I just loved to change fonts in my school works - no other typewriter would do this. :D And the kind of ribbon made a perfect impression. Ollivetti needed several years to come with a...
