I like the looks of that hat. CEO seems to be a strange name though. Looks more like a safari style of hat. I like it with the brim turned downwards, front and back.
Akubra used to be better than they are now, feltwise. I forget what the cutoff year is, but have heard there was a change in...
[huh] What a dummy I am. That is so simple. I guess in order to keep records of particular head shapes, you could trace out the shape and transfer it to another medium for future use if the customer ordered again. Thanks. Fedora
Now I am curious how you transfer the head shape from the conformateur to the formillion? Ideas? All of these tools that I have seen worked off of the scaled down punched out piece of paper(achieved by the conformateur) that is inserted into the center of the formillion. Fedora
Speaking of HJs. If you want a fine HJ buy vintage!!! I own several, and they are like the rest of the vintage hats-very high quality. And they were sold at American stores at that time, just like the other big brands. I have reblocked scores of HJs made in the 1990's, many from Mr Swales...
Here, here, I agree!! Nothing wrong with anyone getting what a hat is worth. And if everyone had the same philosophy as me in regards to hat pricing, we would not have any small hat shops making hats. That is a fact too. I am not putting anyone down, because to make a living making hats, the...
lol Optimo drove me to creating the AB line. ;) Just kidding. I liked the handsewn elements of the Optimos, but face it, your Optimo and the 3 that I bought just like yours(1200 bucks worth of hats), were made from bodies that were the low end felt produced by the factory. If I priced the hats...
Great collection!
Uh, this guy is one of those fellows that just looks good in any hat. I can't pull that off myself. My ugly mug demands only certain styles. I am the poorer for it. Fedora
I actually saw a vintage wool hat once that was really good as far as wool hats go. It wasn't like cardboard, very soft in fact, but still much coarser than fur felt. I think this is the exception rather than the rule though. In retrospect, I would not doubt if that wool had been treated with...
The reverse taper is directly related to the amount of taper, or lack of taper on the front and back of the block used to create the hat. I have some vintage hat blocks that have quite a bit of front and back taper, and even if you put in a deep top crease, you will get a straight front and...
Yes, that would solve the problem that occurred to me.(a one size fits all scenerio) I think it is a great idea. I may just have to buy a hat from you Art so I can get me one of those!! Of course mine would have knots in diverse places around the perimeter! lol Again, great idea!!! Knotty Head...
Which Bogey hat does it look like? I can't see the resemblence.
Wrong crease, wrong brim treatment, although the color may be similiar. Perhaps I am looking at the wrong film? I guess the side shots of both hats look similiar, now that I look again, but gosh I can't...
Art, we have had to do the same thing. I love working on vintage hats, but when the refurbs hurt the turnaround time for new hats, something has to give. I still have boxes of refurbs stacked to the ceiling and try to work those in with the new hats. There is a big demand for the refurb business...
Not the same chemical. From the internet.
Plus, in my local hardware store, they have Crown brand Naptha and Crown brand Mineral Spirits. I therefore surmise they are different. Fedora
First, I am not very knowledable in regards to these hats. But, I bought one from a guy named Casey, and while I had told him I was looking after a taller crowned variety, (5 inches once creased) I got the regular short crowned version. Who said it was easy to stretch these hats? Mine will not...
Welcome to the RMNZ club!! I bought one a few years ago, although mine is not the russet brown. Mine is horse hide, and one day I hope to have it broken in!! It is the only jacket that I have ever owned that will never be for sale. I love the slim cuts of these jackets, and non of my other A-2...
That sort of fedora would have to be worn high on the head, which usually means a smaller sized hat than you would normally wear. Unless the top of your head is perfectly flat, with no dome. ;) Short crowned hats generally were worn high on the head for obvious reasons. Fedora
Great find!! I reblocked a few of these hats and all that I have handled have a really stiff brim, with the crown being less stiff. But all have been fairly stiff hats. I always wondered if they made a dress grade stiffened hat in this 100 line. Like Besdor, I have yet to see one if they did...
Thanks, but I cannot take any credit for the color selection. I just did as I was told!!:)
Here is one, that has a nuance on the bow as well, although it is much more subtle. Same block shape, but different brim flange and ribbon width. This ribbon here is 1 15/16 in width, vintage antique...
