"Deals primarily in" =/= "how many custom shops are left"
Baron being out of stock on a felt, or not wanting to pay Optimo's premium doesn't disqualify them from being bespoke makers in my mind.
...Brass Rooster, Hatwrks, Tatton Baird, D-Bar-J, Batsakes...
Re: conformateur, per Scientific Hat Finishing "nine tenths of all sales made require no conforming..." As I understand it, they were used mostly for stiff felts and then later adopted by custom makers.
What @belfastboy said.
Even if we're only counting shops with a brick and mortar presence, it's WAY more than seven. I can name that many off the top of my head. Paul's Hat Works, Baron Hats, VS, Northwest, Heritage Hats, Peters Bros, Optimo, Wellema, Penman.
Then we have folks like Black...
It's not so much that they can't, more so that they don't.
I mean, clear beaver felt is probably not coming back anytime soon, but Hatco could do an open crown dress western if they really wanted to. I also like hats in this style, but it's apparently not terribly popular among modern hat...
Hmm, well, Fender guitars, for example, licenses out their headstock shapes to a company called Warmoth. They are in turn able to offer the trademark shapes and use Fender trademarks in advertising (e.g. "Replacement Telecaster neck"), but they cannot offer logo decals or replicate any Fender...
Probably 70s or later. Beaver 50 would have been a higher end felt (there was also a 100 and 150 at points in the timeline), but from a decade of overall lower quality when compared to the immediate post war period.
Cool hat!
Here's more on the store it was sold from: http://berkeleyheritage.com/berkeley_landmarks/call_me_joe.html
It lasted until at least when my dad was around because He sometimes references old Berkeley landmarks and House of Harris is one of them.
Stingy #2 is a VS Playboy in lightweight beaver, black cherry. Hard to make out in this pic, but Art did add a double row of stitching in red on the 2 1/4" brim. It's too bad this Winchester (presumably) felt isn't more widely available. Still one of my favorites.
Don't know. The last I heard somebody got a hat by contacting Steve's sister on Facebook a few years ago, but that was a bridge too far for me for a hat. Penman has the blocks for AB hats and he seems to be the only steward of the brand. Though he has nothing to do with Steve's unfulfilled...
Ooof. Several threads have gone awry, let's just say that.
Also, not for nothing, but Steve often adjusted specs to the wearer's face. Without any other context than he asked for a picture of your face, I wouldn't necessarily say that was a threat. I think I probably sent Steve a picture of my...
Answer still hasn't changed.
just type in "vintage fedora" in on eBay and the lions share of hats that will show up will be from the 60s or later.
From the perspective of a good chunk of folks here, 60's hats are when the quality had already begun to drop off precipitously from the 'golden...
Today I learned....

I think I'd like it better if it just had the contrasting band/bow.
And yes, I too like the hatbox!
Speaking of modern ORs, Stetson Japan is getting an open crown OR.

I have a hat in the same Ranch Tan color, I like it! It's got a bit of a pale gold/yellow undertone.
Baron swears they made a hat for the show, but I have also heard Stetsons were used. Could very well be both are true.
