Yes, it's very possible to make hats with a minimum of tools. Of course having a brim press would allow one to make more substantially built hats, it's not strictly necessary. You would need a block; flange; an iron; good source of steam; and an assortment of hand tools. The brim tolliker is... -

vintage felts are denser than their modern equivalents. On the earlier hats we can probably attribute that to the use of mercury on the fur before the felting process. the current 4x is a wool felt and there is no 4x OR in the lineup. So, yes, grades have changed. As to whether your 4x is the same composition as the current 6x, who knows? The blends are never disclosed. -
