(Trigger warning) Are we giving too much credit for wabi-sabi/Japanese craftmanship reputation for uneven graining (especially in high visible area)?

You essentially have no agency with big brands. Your only option is not to buy their fake grain or fake "teacore". For two grand you can go custom and specify your hide and your panels. Plenty of good makers out there who will make a mind-blowing piece for two grand.

Usa Army Fishtail Parka M 1951 Korea verify

Looks like a paperclip Talon main zipper, which would date the jacket to 1950s.

(Trigger warning) Are we giving too much credit for wabi-sabi/Japanese craftmanship reputation for uneven graining (especially in high visible area)?

I am with navetsea regarding definition of wabi-sabi. To me it is an appeal of old, frayed, fragile, but carefully mended item that still retains its functionality. But I did see a more general definition that wabi-sabi is beauty found in imperfection. Which is OP's point I guess. Anyway, I...

    Impregnole any info?

Being a chemist, and having worked for Sun Chemical in NJ many years ago, I did some digging. It looks like this is the same, German Impregnol(e). The technology owners (Chemisch Fabrik Pfersee) did a joint venture and brought the brand to the US in 1929, and sold it to Sun Chemical in 1946...

    Five Star Leather Jackets

@Oystermuppet - $400 is a good budget for a quality used jacket if you are patient. You can look for a used jacket in a very good (almost new) condition. You can also start a thread here titled something like this: "Leather jacket styles and brands for tall and slim guys". I am pretty sure...

Thanks, it is a data point, but you are a giant compared to me, lol. I may be looking at a 38 or 40. Are they true to size, or oversized like most military stuff?

leather jackets with a still-reasonable used market?

I think he meant (my recollection) a hit or miss situation with LW Japan, with samples floating around that were of inferior quality. I also had a LW suede trucker out of the Japanese line which was built like a tank. But I would hesitate now to buy LW from there.

Another shot of the Spiegel, this one from same time last year. It was cold that day, so I was trying to layer to cover my kidneys, lol. Trouble with those 50s cross-zips is that below -5C the cold wind can be too much sometimes. Love it anyway.
