Hey guys, I'm looking at buying some hides and creating a bespoke or MTM jacket when I visit Vietnam or China later next year.
With black friday sale going on, I thought I take advantage of the discounts on hides. From quick googling it seems like people recommend buying 40 to 45 sqft of...
I had a feeling the shinki shells they make like you alluded to it's not same quality as the ones that they provide to Japanese makers. The shinki shell i've handled from Meermin it's not great, not even as good as the cheap Argentia shells. I got caught in the hype too, they claim it takes them...
That is how they restore well worn or damaged footwear with "boning" or with very fine grit sand paper and sand it away and redye. The boning essentially repeat the glass jack operation during the finishing process at the tannery.
Check out bedos on YouTube, he has a lot of videos restoring...
I started to only buy suede / roughout(and shell) shoes/boots. Most of grain side (kudu, deer, cow, horse etc) have terrible grain breaks, no matter how good the clicking is.
The waxy commander suede from CFS should be made into jackets, weather proof, made for PNW weather.
Himel and Viberg, as a Canadian I wouldn't recommend either. Both overpriced and catered to specific audiences. There are just too many alternatives that make the same product with better QC at half the price.
It make sense if it's bloom for horween leathers, it happens often in high quality shell cordovans. I have never seen it in any CXL/Essex,dublin tannage.
With shell you just brush it away with a boar or horsehair brush.
Shinki being pigment dyed, not sure how fat can emerge out from a layer of...
chrome or combo tanned, can't wear stuff that is not weather proof in PNW. But I hear if you soak a veg tan in the rain, the rain spot will even it out.
Not sure how the shinki semi pigment finished would look like, i know the shinki horsebutts for shoes will get 3 shades darker.
In theory, both horse and cow CXL can be stretched alot at least 20 percent(horse could be less). This is coming from shoes and belts experience.
This is due to horween's ancient tannage method that doesn't stretch out the leather while drying. Most tannery will stretch the hide out to get more...
How much sqft do you have to send to 5 star for jacket? Is it actually 50 sqft ?
What if the hides are 1st runs, with no belmishes ?
I'm trying to decide between Cidu and 5 star. Cidu has La brentega bull hide some orange Italian horse hides from tannery that I can't recall on top of my head.
