great clothes! I especially love all the 30's clothes. They are a bit pricey, but, making them yourself should be fairly inexpensive. I also liked the 'create a look' feature at the side. Adds a nice touch.

Anthropologie is doing gangbusters business. It's all but supporting its parent company, Urban Outfitters, these days. As I understand it, the savvy buyers from the now-defunct Marshall Field's department store chain were hired by Anthropologie.

Anthropologie is doing gangbusters business. It's all but supporting its parent company these days. As I understand it, the savvy buyers from the now-defunct Marshall Field's department store chain were hired by Anthropologie.

Huh! That's good to know. What gets me is that it's owned by Urban Outfitters, Inc, who almost singlehandedly made the teen culture lust after 70's and 80's "vintage".

Ah, Anthropologie.

I've watched this place go from largely obscure to so crowded that you can't squeeze your way to the counter in the last couple of years...and I'm disappointed by the change in their designs. It's more and more obvious to me that they're owned by U.O. because of the very heavy 70s influence in a lot of their pieces (particularly disappointing were Fall 05 and Winter 06) and a much more "runway" inspired collection. Part of what I really loved about Anthropologie was the unique, vintage, eclectic and whimsical feeling their clothes used to have -- this is shriveling as trendy people crowd the sales floor demanding trendy items. Changed the whole tone of the place. If I wanted something that looked like it came from U.O. I would have gone there for it.

This season they've kicked out a few gems (I love those linen sailor pants! Except when I tried them on they had about a 3 inch rise, no joke), a few really classic, vintagey pieces, but I miss the whimsy of things like the ferris wheel dress and the bicycle sweater. :cry:

There are at least 2 locations in NYC.

Were they always owned by UO? When I first saw their store (I guess that was about 10 years ago) I was under the impression that it stood alone.

Anthropologie is a spinoff of Urban Outfitters, I believe. An experiment of theirs that caught on.

there are several here in DC and MD - Comparing them to other stores lately, I'd still give Anthropologie some credit.

I absolutely adore Anthropologie's style but their cuts are awful. I know they have several designers lines in the shop, but most of them were not created to flatter a woman's body at all. I stopped by the other day and must of tried on $400 worth of clothes and not one single thing fit me properly. And I wasn't the only one. So many women were walking out of the fitting room empty handed saying how cute it looked in the catalog or on the hanger. I don't know what's up with them, but it's a real shame because they have some pretty things.

you would think by the prices that their asking that their clothing would fit perfectly. Well, if people are going out of there empty handed and with their clothes fitting like they do, their bound to go bunk sooner or later I would imagine.

I've been shopping anthropologie for years. Back in the day when they were somewhat affordable. And, you really can get good deals when they have sales.
I love the thirties style dresse. I got their catalog the other day, has anyone seen there shoes? So beautiful, but soooo expensive. Hence the reason why I wait for the sales. We have two stores near us, and even though I love the clothing, I really don't like the customer service. For some reason I always get snubbed by one sales associate or another. They are in very wealthy areas of the city, so I guess the sales people feel they would have bigger sales if they help the woman who look like they have money. That's fine with me, I don't like to be bothered by salespeople anyway!
