Your Opinion on Aero Battered Horsehide

I was looking at the tan battered horsehide specifically.

How does the battered HH compare in terms of breaking in and developong character. It seems already soft and to have lots of variation we typically associate with character in a jacket. How does it change over time or doesn't it?

Wdw has a Shackleton in battered HH, I'm sure he can tell you how it's changed.

Personally, if you like the distressed look, I think their oil pull horsehide looks better. It is a bit more subtle, which I like. When I see a distressed leather jacket, I always think of when I would go over to Ed Kretz Jr.s house and see his dads motorcycle jacket, it looked almost new, but it sure saw a lot of action back in the 30s-50s!

I have a sample of the oil pull and it looks like it won't change much over the years. It reminds me of the Schott naked cowhide, which i like. Beyond the visual, how do they compare in feel?

From the samples of battered HH I've handled, I would say that it would take on character quite quickly. It's a dark top coat over a lighter under, so when it wrinkle it starts to change immediately as the undercoat shines through. It's got a soft hand and is, I would say, a medium weight.

I would agree with Sloan. I have samples of both and the battered has more character than the oil pull - it looks like well broken-in leather, whereas the oil pull looks, well, oily.

Aero lists battered horsehide with its 2oz mid-weight hides. I was hoping wdw would have seen this thread by now as his vest is made from this hide and has is in its second season of use.

Here's my battered brown HH Shackleton today. As it's a vest/waistcoat, it doesn't get the same amount of damage that a jacket would, so it stays new looking longer than jackets would. I wouldn't say it's noticeably lighter than regular FQHH, marginal at best. I think the Shackleton is a great buy (cheap too) and along with my Irvin is something I wear much more than I expected.

Ken sent me some seal battered horse hide a year or so ago as a sample for my China Air b3. It's the best leather I have ever seen. Crumple it up and burnish it by hand and it looks amazing.

I think it's a great looking leather. That new August jacket they have in battered tan looks awesome.

...is it fair to assume that a tumbled HH will look/feel pretty close/similar to a battered HH for instance? I really like the way the antique / tumbled brown FQHH looks on screen from Aero's website.

Similar, but not quite as much character as the battered. Here's a shot of my tumbled brown on the first day I received it: (lots of color variation but different than battered) Tumbled does make the leather softer than the regular FQHH, so it breaks in much quicker.

I'm new to FL and just recently "discovered" Aero, but from what I have been told the battered, tumbled, and antique are just three terms for the same treatment. Can anyone confirm this? It would seem from pawineguy's post above this is not the case?

Battered is a distinct leather from "tumbled / vintage", which are the two terms they use interchangeably. Battered is also a slightly lighter leather than the FQHH used in the "tumbled / vintage".

Tumbled tends to be fqhh that has been processed on Aero's behalf.

Tumbled and Vintage are the same leather , just known by a different name . It is regular Horween Chrxl Fq Horse that has gone through an extra tumbling process where the skins are dry tumbled in large wooden drums , this gives the leather a vintage look and a slightly softer finish as the breaking in process has been started. It also reduces the pull up effect somewhat so it is not as noticeable as regular Chrxl.

Battered horse is completely different. It is European mid weight horse , the same base as our Mid Weight Jerky and has been finished with a natural parafin wax top coat. The leather has a waxy feel to it and a very strong pull up.

What does the term "pull up" mean in this context?

I think "pull up" is the lightening of darker areas as it is stretched and worn.
