And while they weren't print ads, we cannot forget the Burma Shave signs!

Let's bring this thread back into the limelight with a couple more ads.

Djer-Kiss got a little carried away with their fairy theme on this ad from 1920:

I love the copy on this 1922 Manon Lescaut ad.

Here is my all-time favorite. Probably the best automobile advertisement of all time, and one of the most effective ads in history:

I like the graphics on this inconsequential RCA Radiotron election advertisement form 1928. Atwater Kent also had a good electrion oriented campaign that year.

My favorite campaign is that of 1913, introducing the camel brand cigarettes. It established the "teaser" campaign in American advertising.

First month's ads, in all local papers and national magazines:

then this advert for the fifth week:

And finally, on the day of introduction:

The Camel campaign was fantastically successful. Within a year it had firmly established a new national brand, which soon eclipsed all existing brands, the principal among which was Fatima.

And, of course, there was the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad's famous Phoebe Snow. Between 1904 and the Great War this white clad vestal extolled the hygenic virtues of the smokeless anthricte coal used by the Delaware, Lackawanna's engines;

Says Phoebe Snow
about to go
upon a trip to Buffalo
"My gown stays white
from morn till night
Upon the Road of Anthracite"

Phoebe says, and Phoebe knows,
that smoke and cinders spoil good clothes.
'Tis thus a pleasure and delight
to take the Road of Anthracite!

A cozy seat, a dainty treat
make Phoebe's happiness complete
With linen white, and silver bright
upon The Road of Anthracite

She also extolled the service provided by the porters, the fine quality of the food, and the modern accoutremont of the cars on "The Road of Anthracite":

Now Phoebe may
by night or day
enjoy her book upon the way
Electric light
dispels the night
Upon the Road of Anthracite
