Lucian Bernhard (1883-1972)

was one of the great advertising artists of all time - as well as a typographer, sculptor, furniture designer and educator.

He was born Emil Kahn in Berlin. At 17 he saw an exhibition of modern design and repainted the house and furnishings in riotous colors. His father threw him out, and he changed his name.
In 1905 he entered an advertising contest with this poster:

He won, and some say, started the era of the modern poster singlehanded.

Bernhard emigrated early, in 1923. But he was still very formative in 20th century graphic design - especially to the German school, known for its simple, direct elegance.

I love this thread. Is Interwoven still in biz?

A search shows 'Interwoven' by Burlington. My guess is either that Interwoven is part of Burlington, or that the name is being used in a generic manner (they would have either sold the name, or are no longer around to defend it).

Someone here might have some better clues.

I picked up some pretty good argyle socks by Burlington a few years back, but not as darn cool as those interwoven jobs!
