Children are human beings -- not trophies, pets, or fashion accessories.
I reserve a particular disdain for people whose pets may as well be pieces of furniture — things to be changed out when fashions change, or when they get bored with it.
The law regards my pets as property. But we — the missus and I — have a different take on the matter. We don’t own these animals. We feed them and see to it they get veterinary care (I don’t wish to recall how much that’s come to over the past year or so) and soft, warm places to sleep and lots of attention from their humans. They are living beings. We’ve habituated them to the lives they lead here. It would be unconscionable to take that from them while they still live pretty much pain free and are still taking sustenance. And when that is no longer the case, I’ll surely cry, as I have when my other pets went the way of all things.
