WW II U.S. Tanker jacket British theater made

When I first saw this on the bay I thought yet another Chinese "Fury" jacket. Upon further examination (the pictures were marginal) I saw that at the very least it was a good repro, and was going cheap as chips. When it arrived I realized what I had!

I guess I should have posted it in WW II. Or maybe we should start a thread entitled: How do you like this pose in my new leather jacket?

Back when there were good collector's shops still around, I was always astonished to see garments that had obviously never been issued. Still had all those little paper tags that WWII fatigue uniforms had. They were all small sizes, to be sure, but it still amazed me that such things were still around 60 years later. I'm almost certain there is a government warehouse somewhere with bundles blue wool shirts left over from the Spanish-American war. They'd all be small sizes, too, no doubt.

I have a few things, none surplus, that are much too good to wear.

OK........I'm glad some of my fellow loungers saw this treasure,and no I have no plans to wear it. It's too valuable, and theatrical, and last but not least IT'S TOO BIG! LOL, I'm a medium and it's XL. I did a little research on the "Lucky Seventh" Armoured Division. Arrived UK June '44 , Landed at Omaha and Utah Beach August '44 attached to Patton's 3rd Army . ,Battled through western europe until end of the war. Major campaigns Operation Market-Garden, Battle of the Bulge etc. The G. I. had less than a 2 month window with the London haberdasher, which may explain why it was probably never picked up.

That's a really great score! I've never seen a private-purchase Tanker, just field jackets and flying jackets, so this is really interesting, and even more so since it's a NCO and not an officer. NCO's didn't receive a clothing allowance, so this was purchased out of his own funds, and likely for a very limited application of use. The jacket is too nice to wear in combat and the NCO should have had access to an issue jacket at no cost for such purposes, so I'd think this was either more for leave or he was assigned to a staff position, where individuals were more inclined to wear private-purchase goods.

An extremely rare, beautiful item, but lacking the value of an issue jacket. Best of luck with this!

Correct. The tailor's label is seemingly incongruous with the broad arrow, but the broad arrow can appear on items made for U. S. forces, so the only real oddity is to see the broad arrow on an item that appears to be private purchase. I suspect that these jackets were made in some quantity and made available to U. S. forces via the PX system and purchased by the U. S. QMC or, less likely, as a QMC purchase for direct issue purposes.

Just about anything is possible. I've seen PX items w/ out size labels before, and the broad arrow really pushes your jacket out of the realistic realm of private purchase. Why would a tailor's item have such a mark and a Conmar zipper (a component that further leans to contracted for PX consumption)? Based on my experience, this item is QMC purchased for PX consumption. You'd be surprised w/ the items purchased by the QMC to be sold in PX's, not the least being wristwatches made by Rolex, Longines, Patek, etc.
