WTB: Vanson type A size 40

Will also consider other cafe style jackets (Aero, Johnson, Schott, etc)... Primary use will be motorcycle, so would really like a jacket with armor or the ability to add armor.

I’d like to go black on this one... distressed if possible!

Have you ever tried the cafe racer style jackets? In any event, very difficult to add armor to these jackets. Maybe a Dainese cafe racer style is more appropriate? I have a dainese mesh top with top of the line body armor. It does not work well with any tight fight jacket. For the most part, I use this Dainese mesh top with a loose-fitting jacket like a North face gortex mountain guide on top. There are many guys here who are far more knowledgeable than me in this subject.

I have a very form fitting textile jacket with full D3O armor today... granted it’s not thick leather, but still works fine for its intended purpose.

But point taken... will definitely be cautious to ensure there’s enough room with armor.

This. If I wanted an armored jacket for riding, this is what I would choose (I don't ride).

So I owned a Model "A" Vanson for about a year back in 2014. It was an interesting jacket, hard to really put my finger on how it "fit" if indeed it ever did. [Pre-Fedora-Lounge days for me, I did not know about this forum yet]. It's a boxy-cut jacket with a very exaggerated longer rear side than the front. While it did fit ok, it just was a very difficult jacket to put into a classification. Carried out at Thurston Brothers really does not stock these as people have found them difficult to fit and enjoy. There is no way to pull the sides in closer on the A, which appears to now be called the AR (for Rayon lining):

The Model B, however (for quite a bit more $$$) is a very easy to fit Cafe Racer, that looks more proportional. I owned a Vanson America jacket which is simply a well decorated Model B with a flag on the back and stripes on the front. Would have been perfect for a 4th of July ride.

As far as armor, since I no longer ride, I do not even consider it. Maybe for that dark-alley walk in Chicago but otherwise I have no need of it.

I have an awesome vintage AZ2 (lined AR) with a pile lining. It's vintage size 42, but more like a 40 in current sizing. It's brown, however.

The B is the perfect cafe if you don’t want armor (IMO).

I wouldn’t choose anything else for riding and/or a seriously bulletproof cafe.

You can also snag closeout Dainese Cafe Racer style coats (with full armor, including back protectors) on motorcyclegear.com. No affiliation, but as a lifetime motorcycle rider/instructor, I just don't think a jacket without armor is really all that appropriate for motorcycling (IMHO)
