Writing Pen Clipped to Coat Front Pocket?

What is the significance of clipping a (nice) writing pen to a suit coat or blazer/sports coat exterior chest pocket? Is it considered to be good taste? Thanks.

Period photographs of politicians/statesmen and diplomats come to mind.
I rather like it and it certainly is the safest place to carry a single pen on your suit.

And after all... what else would the clip be good for?

Some gents choose to prominantly display their acessories and a fine pen is certainly that. I usually put my sunglasses in the outer breast pocket (along with a hanky.) My pen goes in an inside pocket made especially for it.

Aren't the fountain pen aficionados (and the rest) tempting fate by doing that?

A pen belongs in the briefcase until one sits down to business.

If I wear a pen, it goes in a shirt pocket. If a pen leaks, I'd rather it destroyed a dress shirt than a suit jacket or sport coat.
