WOW Patina !!!! --> How can I get this look ?

It's time for a new jacket!
After I found this pic of an AERO Montgomery I desiced it must be dark BROWN for a new fqhh jacket

What kind of leather have I ask for to get with this amazing marbled effect - is it just because of the lighter base color of the hide??



I love the variations of darker and lighter spots - and looking for a hide which looks like this when its broken in:

If I look at my new Sheene it seems it could break in that way. Picture 2 (in the sun) has a touch of the color in your pictures above.

And the sleeves from the side picture remind me of the patina above in a veeeery early stage.

On the Aero "Links" page, the German company Kentaurus has nice photos of that jacket in the dark brown. It really is beautiful, and I've always wondered if they used a different color for that jacket. Maybe you could ask Holly.

Windward, that looks exactly like the brown FQHH on my Aero Barnstormer which has seen a bit of wear .

I'd put money on that jacket being standard Aero brown FQHH which has merely been worn for some time. It's a beautiful hide and develops the best patina I have seen virtually on any leather.

I'm going with another standard FQHH and make/enjoy the break-in by myself. But I want a veeery dark brown.

I have a brown vintage fqhh (aka as tumbled) which I love cause it has developed a veeery nice patina - but, its not the darkest hide - more like mid-brown-rusty tone and has lots of variations in colors and its a more soft and supple hide.

So next I want a dark brown but want to be sure that it develops such an outstanding patina.
I guess its due to the lighter base color - any opinions?

Maybe here's a bit too much "patina" - I am not keen to look too extrem. . . oh what a funny pun

It's really just the standard brown FQHH. My LHB has started to take a similar patina on it - though maybe not as 'tiger-striped' - but the light base has shone through, especially on the arms and shoulder (a lot of backpack use) and has a fantastic grading of colour. I'd just specify that you'd like the darkest hides possible when they're making your jacket up, it's not an unreasonable request.

Another vote that it's just Aero's beautiful standard brown FQHH. It ages wonderfully.

But I want a veeery dark brown.

I requested Dark Brown FQHH when I ordered a 1930s Half Belt through Thurston Bros and Wade said it was no problem. Having it though, I honestly can't tell if it's any darker than the standard brown. But I really do love the color I received, so no complaints.

Has anyone seen Aero's new aniline steerhide? http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/product-detail.php?id=92, this could also be a good mid weight option and may look fantastic after some wear....

Interesting. The FQHH on my Maxwell was almost black; it was such a dark brown. For my Teamster, in the sewing process, I asked for the "lightest brown" FQHH in stock. Curious to see what difference there will be. It can never hurt to ask.

Have you seen the new Italian veg tanned dark seal leather that Carrie is getting over at Insurrection? Given the veg tanning, that is a contender for rich patina building.

The russet hide is particularly nice. It's got good variation and grain already, but the seal's characterful too.

This effect reminds me of shell cordovan shoes, in particular BB's unlined penny loafers. The creases and wrinkles get lighter at the stress points.

The jacket you've asked about is actually made from what we'd call 'Grade 2 CXFQHH', we don't usually use this (except for Blue Label jackets,ie discounted jackets). This is Horsehide with belly lines and stretch marks, hence slight Zebra effect and the darker lines. When they're new these skins look a bit rough and slightly unattractive but the leather looks amazing after a decent break in.

We've got a freshly made jacket in this leather at the factory at the moment, Ed (one of our cutters) has just made himself a modified Highwayman using this hide (the first jacket he's ever made!).

We do have a wee bit of this leather in stock at the moment, so we'll look at getting some more of it used. If you want dibs on some Windward just drop me a line and we'll sort it out for you
