In the Golden Era, folks didn't know if they were going to have a baby boy or a girl.

Nowadays, the technology exists to enable us to find out whether it will be a boy or a girl.

My question is: if you or your wife were pregnant, would you choose to find out the sex of the baby - given that the technology to do this is available?

I found it strange that most people here in Ireland choose not to know (even though the doctor knows). They want the element of surprise.

My own attitude would be that if the information is "out there", I'd want to know, I reckon it would be kind of artificial not to know, if you know what I mean....

This attitude puts me out of sinc with a lot of my peers. But I just think that the people of the '30s going to the World's Fair etc., would want to know, if they could.

I guess really the greater question is: do we want to strictly live like the folk from the Golden Era (dress, technology, customs); or do we want to espouse their values and curiosities (they embraced new technolgies)?

.

I figured you two were getting close since I recall the due date was around the time of the QM.

We chose to know the sex of our children so that we could pick the name and decorate the room accordingly. Some choose to wait and that's fine. Whatever works.

As for technology.....the Fedora Lounge is on the internet.

I'm happy for you my friend. Please keep us posted regarding the little one.

Will fill everybody in as soon as we get some photos up.

All's well and he came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon.

First of all CONGRATULATIONS Mr & Mrs. H and welcome Baby.

I have two girls, I didn't find out with either of them. They arrived in 1992 and 1995 where the information was available but I had an old fashioned dr. who said, "You are 21 (& 24), perfectly healthy, there is no reason in the world to do an ultrasound."

I was disappointed initially, but now the announcements, "It's a GIRL" are the most memorable suprises of my life. I wouldn't trade that feeling for anything.

For our first baby, I do not want to know - I want it to be a surprise. For any following children, I am not sure...part of me would like to know, so we can plan for what we need in the way of clothing and such (don't want to dress the poor little fellow in pink dresses after all!) but I guess it will depend on how things are when that time comes.

Congrats to you and the Mrs.! :eusa_clap

My wife and I chose not to know.
Not because it is vintage or old fashioned but it was just what we decided.
It was the best surprise I ever had!

I have 2 daughters, and although the doctors ordered ultrasounds on both of them we couldn't tell the sex so both were a surprise. I was hoping for girls so I was pleasantly surprised both times. I did want to know but it didn't work out that way.

I would chose not to know. But, that might change when I'm actually in the situation.
Knowing does make things a bit easier for picking out clothes, toys, and decorating. But, the way I see it is there are so few surprises left in the world. I think it would be hard to wait a full nine months, and even harder to go to the doctors and not ask them, given that they probably know. But, I like the element of a really big surprise. Having a baby is such a thrilling, life changing event. I'd like to keep it as surprising as possible. I can just picture the doctor showing me my baby for the first time and revealing the sex. It just seems like it would make an incredibly exciting moment even more incredibly exciting.

Good Luck to you and Mrs. H. I wish Laura a healthy and easy delivery, and a healthy baby. Having a baby is such a miracle. Enjoy every moment of it. Keep us informed as to how she is doing. She should be due soon, if I'm not mistaken. I hope, although I know you will be incredibly busy, that you will start a thread about the little one, and show us lots of pictures.
Congratulations and best wishes for an easy delivery and a happy beautiful baby!

Yeah, but, as someone explained to me, it's a surprise whenever you find out. I could see no way to refute that logic.

In my opinion, a large piece is the building of anticipation. Life is so short, it is delicious to take the few extra months to dream about the possibilities of what life will like with with a boy or a girl.

Succesful Planning!

If you know you can plan on what you need to do and get the items you need.

You can get what you need without getting wrong sex items such as the right color baby outfits or how to do the baby's room, etc.

If you let the baby shower guests and parents and friends they get to make the right buying decisions too.
