Work Hat.

I have a desk job. The usual problem with a desk jobs is there is little to no natural light....... I don't have that problem. I sit right underneath a sky light. My problem is when the sun comes out on a bright, sunny, cloudless day the sun beams threw the sky light, reflects off the white ceiling, right down onto me. My eyes strain against the glare and I feel like I am trying to get a tan. I don't like to tan. In fact my father died of skin cancer so I view to much exposure to the sun a bad thing. More over my eyes are bad enough as it is. Right now I wear my hat at my desk. Usually a fedora, sometimes a ball cap. I am doing it out of necessity but it is still uncouth.

Relocating to another desk is not an option. I am not going to get into trouble wearing a hat at my desk.

The question. What would you do? Do you think there is a better solution I have not thought of? If you had to do it, what hat would you wear?

I had a similar issue but was able to move. Directly over a skylight. Seemed great at first but then everyday at noon it turned into the map room at Tanis scene from Raiders...

If the arbitrary rules don't do much for your situation, ignore them.

Not wearing hats indoors is not grounded in some metaphysical truth (okay, claims of metaphysical truth is where the rule originally comes from), it's a convention. And if that convention creates problems with your life, why bother with it?

As for what hat, I would stay away from baseball caps in a professional environment, and if you're trying to avoid skin cancer. They won't protect your neck from the rays. So I would stick with the fedora, and If felt is too warm (considering the icy temperatures many offices are kept at, perhaps not an issue), then I would go with a nice panama or straw. Perhaps even break out a boater now and then.

I had the same problem when I lived in Dallas, only with windows on the south and west portions of the house where the kitchen, breakfast, and family rooms--the most utilized areas--were.

I'm sorry I cannot remember the name of the company, but there's one that makes a film shade that blocks the amount of light you desire, as well as UV rays from clear surfaces including sky lights.

That's what I got for my windows, and it did a wonderful job while still enabling sufficient sun and light to come through for that airy feel.

You could sell the idea to management by mentioning the reduced energy usage the film confers. If that doesn't work, point out that skin cancer is one of the fastest growing work-related illness claims. Can you say WORKERS' COMPENSATION?
