You got that one...

... :eusa_clap well done :eusa_clap ... and a braver man than I, tho' I have that same five gallon bucket out back. I came so very close to bidding on that 'un, glad I didn't since you snagged it.
All I could think of when I saw that stain was "antifreeze" and I have no clue if that is correct, I sincerely hope not. I'm sure you can address that issue, and you will have yourself a nice catch... if not, well everyone needs another yard hat, eh?
How many ORs or similar does this make in your closet?

Great looking hats RBH. I like that Resistol and I was very close to bidding on that Stetson but I too was a bit worried about the stains. Good luck with the cleaning.

Thanks all..

GF- I have not recieved it yet, but it is silverbelly. Have to wait to see what shade it is.

TnT- I just barely came in under the wire on that Strat. I'll not say how high I went but you almost had you a hat. Hope the stain is easily removed!

RB- Are you talking about the green stain on the Resistol? If so that is a sweat stain. I had a smaller one on one of my O R's. The Naptha did well on getting it out. So I think it will come out OK...

I have 3 Open Roads. Great hats...
thanks Douglas, and all of ya'll say a prayer to the HAT GOD that those stains come out !

That's a relief, it just looked so toxic green on my monitor!

... I may soon have 2 O R's to get rid of. Both have been to Arts for a cleaning and resize. Up from a 3/8 to close to a 1/2....

... keep me in the loop on that account, hombre!

It is GREEN -- it is at the back of the sweat where the sweat is stitched together. All I can think of is that over time the sweat, oil ect. builds up and ''leaks'' throught the stitches and that is the color that remains.

I'm just wondering what the person ate and drunk to stain their lid green.:p
But seriously, those will look fantastic once cleaned up! There is always some sort of potential in every beater.:eusa_clap My Whippet is a good example. Art took that beater and made it shine again.

Cheers!

This info from one of our fine Vendors here at the Lounge

"The green stain on your hat is most likely from the ferrule (probably brass) that joins the reeding where the sweatband is sewn together. If you tip up the sweat just under the bow this is where the stain probably started. Just thought you'd like to know this bit of hat trivia."

Thanks DC.
I'm trying to find out which pin ,mine that has no lettering on it{TWA}
or the pin that has the red TWA letters on it was original to the Stratoliner hats.
It would seem that TWA would not allow the hats to be sold with TWA on it. BUT.... the planes are not the Stratoliner planes and it is a Stratoliner hat. As all the ads show I now believe that the DC-3 type pin was original to the Stratoliner hat. I shall keep on looking.

RBH- the explanation about the green stain- I'm too new here to venture forth with a technical problem,BUT-my good friend and MIA hatter Bill Nader once showed me a boxful of hatbands that had brass catches & hooks, both of which would be hidden when the band went on and got adjusted. Don't know beans about whether this was a special thing or not, but it came to mind, and I was
going to bid on that hat as well, didn't know how to clean it...was quietly delighted when brain remembered Bill's ribbons & the ferrule explanation- hope the cleaning works!! After lotsa years in the arts/antiques business, with all those chemicals & solvents, the thought of 5 gal. of naptha drains another 50 brain cells right out... adieu M

Stratoliner update

I'm really happy with the Strat after cleaning. There is a slight shadow where the stain was. I think I will wear it for a few weeks and then attempt another soaking in the Naphtha. The felt is thin and light, its going to make a great everyday fedora for me. I'm loving the light brown color !!
