Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot review

Red Wings

Through the 80s and 90s when I was flying air shows I had a pair of Red Wing 2233 - Mens - 8-inch boots. They were very conferrable even on the flight line in 100 plus degree temperatures. I got lots of complements, and the Army aviators would always ask where I got my "Jump Boots", I woad tell them, we don't use the word Jump around our aircraft! Always a good laugh! I wish they cost less, I wore mine completely out, 3 souls if I remember right.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread. However:

I remember jealously noting the excitement when the 1[,]000 Mile Boot was announced. But at $325, I knew the only pair of shoes I'd ever buy that cost that much would be Alden wingtips.

That is until an old thread on Style Forums got me thinking about them again. Since we're at the end of a season for old stock, I had a look on Google and was amazed to find a pair from a reputable site for $189. I was on the fence until I checked my size and discovered they only had one pair left.

When I was almost finished with the order, I reached the usual page that asked for promotional codes. Thinking the exercise was futile, I googled a random coupon site and copied the biggest one I saw. To my amazement, it worked! This means I was able to buy a pair of 1000 Mile Boots in my size for $152.00 -- with no tax and free shipping!

The downside: The only color that was on sale, sadly, was black, and it's true I'd have loved a pair in weathered brown. But, truthfully, I wear black jeans and cords often enough to use a pair of shoes like this -- why not get boots for the purpose that will last and look good doing so? Besides which, I've called local stores in NYC, and none has discounted the black ones.

Since I picked up the last pair and that was during a sale, there's no need to taunt you by giving you info on the store. But if they ever put other colors on sale, I'll let interested parties know. I'll also factor in my buyer's experience, whatever it might turn out to be.

Gentleman Travelers are another matter entirely. There are ways -- legal ways, he added hastily -- to pick up the cherry red variety for significantly less. PM me if you're in the market (since I'd rather not feed search engine vultures who buy in bulk to make a profit and, in so doing, deprive us all).

Rather amazing score on your part, FT. Very happy for you, and thanks for the heads-up! I actually paused just now to go to the DSW site looking for those, but of course they were probably only available at your store. I'll have a quick look at the DSW en route to my securing vittles, but I'm not expecting to be as lucky.

I'd never have even associated Wolverine Heritage with DSW. Perhaps the recession was the wrong time to be introducing really expensive workboots (though they couldn't have known, since it hadn't happened just yet).

Post script: Two corrections. My boots were actually marked down to $178.00 originally. I know this because, due to a questionable tab navigation menu, I went back to the site, canceled my order and placed it again under the men's tab just to be sure. The same "1 available"/[size absent from menu] action occurred when I canceled and ordered again, but here's the best part: I found a better coupon which also worked, bringing the final total of the transaction to $143.20. When last I looked, people who are size 12 could still order. The rest of us are out of luck.

I'm not giving the name of the store in this post, however, just in case someone here is interested (in which case, PM me or do the same search). When I googled DSW and Wolverine just now, your post was the first entry in the list, which means a lot of people might be visiting DSW today.

Edit: Apparently there's lots of cross-pollination between Style Forums and Fedora. Everyone now knows the store I used was Revolve:

I fell in love with the Wolverine 1000 mile boot and impulsively ran out to an authorized retailer (Neiman-Marcus) and tried them on. They were amazing! I was wearing medium weight socks and tried my normal size 11. I usually wear a wide (E or EE width) shoe so I was concerned with the width. The salesman said they do run a little large for the stated size but that with a wide foot I should order my usual size to compensate for the width. Well, he was right! I very reluctantly plunked down the cash but I am totally happy with the boot! The Horween leather is the BEST available and in time will look superb. I like the fact that I can wear mid-weight socks for those long walks.

All in all, a fantastic boot, traditional, "old-school", comfortable, and beautiful. A boot I've been seeking for many years and now, finally, they are mine ;)

I think the wolverine boot looks great if your going for the depression era hobo or common man, the look I tend to go for

Pine, I'm not trying for the hobo look, at least not intentionally. I am planning on wearing these with a pair of turned up Iron heart jeans and an Aero 50's half belt.
I should have the aero in about 3 months as I ordered it in November, the Wolverine Krause boots should be here by early next week as I pulled the trigger on these last night...

I've got a pair from the very first release of Wolverine 1k's, when there was only the one model and it came in brown or black Horween CXL. They're by far my favorite pair of shoes. I'm just now setting them aside to be resoled (again), but still wear them when its dry out. Care has been the occasional (every 3-6months, depending on the season) stripping with saddle soap and re-proofing with Hubbard's Shoe Grease. Next round of soles will be double-thick leather with a rubber top sole, a new heel (Cat's Paw or Biltrite, depending on whats available), and a WWII-reproduction heel iron, as well as a steel toe tap. They'll hear me coming from miles. The original laces are amazing, but they look even better with leather laces.

I would pick up another pair in a heartbeat if I had the funds, but alas, the first pair were a gift and the grocery business doesn't exactly pay out in spades.

I have a pair in brown and I keep them in very nice shape. I was home for the holidays and my dad noticed my boots and said they looked like the type of boots his grandfather wore when he went into town on the weekend. Now, keep in mind his grandfather was a tobacco farmer and he wore these boots with his best overalls.

Gray,
I think that is a big part of the appeal of these boots, they remind of us of simpler time and aesthetic. I will be wearing mine with my best jeans for a long time

I am really impressed with the leather, the depth of color, I love the contrast stiching...I was off to Home Depot and my usual Saturday errands we had about 2" of snow last night, and the smooth leather soles were a bit slippery, that faded after about ten minutes of walking.

Those are nice....have you seen some of the newest offerings from Danner? They have a new boot line that are of a vintage style and way less money.
