I almost missed this in the picture the client sent to me. He wanted two eyelet/vent holes on each side. There is a first time for everything.......but I become nervous when it comes to punching holes in a good hat. He also wanted feathers so I gave him a choice. He chose the two white ones inserted into the ribbon.

I noticed the eyelets in the photo he sent and I just thought you guys agreed to not add them. As a client, I would have opted to leave it alone, but that’s what he wanted. It’s still an awesome hat and I’d wear the hell out of it.

Yes, almost missed them but I am thinking it was my subconscious blocking it out as I could not come to terms with it!!!

Hello all..Gregory (proud owner of 2 of our Roberts custom hats in beaver and rabbit).. here chiming in....What a positively charming hat that its...and different as you say Robert with the holes and the feathers and the whole nine yards...lmao...Very avant-guarde Cheers..I like it!

This started life as a worn out model called “Farmer” by Vanzina. The wide brim and deep curl won me over. The leather sweatband was disintegrating and far beyond saving. I had it rebuilt by Wolfbrae with the request that the brim curl be retained. The biggest issue is the brim had wide binding and the binding had deteriorated, frayed, and was completely unusable. Robert cleaned it and repaired it to a very high standard. He also had the binding ribbon replaced; this would normally require ironing the brim flat to facilitate the sewing on the new binding. As I requested the original curl be retained, Robert had the binding sewn on the curled brim edge…I can’t imaging that was fun. It’s a great hat that I really like and it’s now ready for another 50 years of service. Thank you, Robert!

My latest from Wolfbrae. This is/was a Beaver Brand western that Robert tore down, reblocked, and put a new ribbon on. I was tempted to go with a new Wolfbrae liner and sweatband, but in the end decided to keep the originals. I like a lot of hats, but I love this one. A full 6” open crown and a 3 1/4” raw edge brim.

Here is a picture of my attempt at recreating the original Winchester Black Cherry dye. I am pleased. Quite good dye distribution and it is black with very strong burgundy undertones to it. The client likes the pics at least so we now move forward to making the hat. Burgundy crown ribbon with either a black brim binding or a ribbon dyed to match the felt.

I ran a hat making workshop this week. Here is the hat my client made for himself. He wanted a nice fedora and now he has one made by his own hand. We had a blast working together.

It was a restoration weekend. Four hats from the 1950's all needing a bit of TLC. One of the grey ones was covered in little spots of balsamic vinegar and oil from a dropped bottle of salad dressing that were tossed into the air and of course landed on the hat. It was painstaking work, naptha, denatured alcohol and many pointy tipped QTips I nicked from my wife's makeup drawer and now the hat is spot free.

All of the hats look new, looks like some really nice work and hard to do, using Naptha to clean and the denatured alcohol, you have to have good ventilation. the results are outstanding.

I used the naptha and alcohol in my office while watching a ball game. Not as if I had a big open pot of it. Just a thimble full and pointy tipped QTips.

Oh ok, the last time that I used that stuff I gave the hat body a bath and boy did I get a contact buzz just breathing the fumes. I guess that I need to start having a little mixer before I work with the stuff?
