Your green Whippet is the perfect fall weather hat!

I totally agree -- this color is perfect for this time of year. Goes great with the foliage!

True Colors

Superb hat and the restoration has returned that hat to a pristine condition.

Color rendition of our hats on the computer screen poses some interesting challenges. Both film and digital cameras have a sensativity to color temperature which is the actual color of the lighting used. Few lights in the home or average business are a true white light but are producing light in a range of colors. Regular light bulbs tend to give a warm yellow to red glow to the photo subject and flourescent tubes tend to be a blue green influence and makes for "Night of the Living Dead" type portraits of people. Some of the newwer lighting have some interesting color shifts. When we view this with our own eyes our brain often compensates so we don't realize the color shift as much in most situations. On some high end video camaeras there is a White Balance button that allows the camera to correct for the lighting.

When we shoot pictures the sun provides natural white light except in the early morning or late afternoon. Outdoors in not always the cure because on a clear day (you can see forever) if you shoot pictures in Open Shade and therefore with out direct sunlight the reflection from that beautiful blue sky will bring in a distinctive blue shift to the subjects of your shot. This is one of the places that brain correction kicks in often so you don't realize the color shift. A lot of serious photographer use reflectors or "fill in flash" to bring the color back to "normal" in these situations.

In direct sunlight many cameras will take a picture that is too bright and wash out the color so you need to see if there are settings to compensate of maybe using a filter will help.

Throw into the mis the question of how far off is you computer screen as compared to the original source of pictures too and this is why there is total consternation over ebay pictures and why it seems so tough to get the color right for the viewer.

Man I gotta dig out my old photography books now.

Sincerely,

For the record, here is the third ad that I found -- a Stetson Playboy in Willow Green:

Any idea when that magazine ad was current, Jimmy? Gotta love the duds, eh? And the manner in which that hat's crown is shaped just makes me all the more comfortable in calling it a "bash."
Great looking Whippet, man. Your collection just gets more and more impressive all the time.

Many thanks, John. I have to say, this is the first hat I have ever sent out to Optimo for a clean and block, and I could not be happier. I asked Graham to block the hat back into in open crown so that I could do my thing with the bash. The original liner was taken out for this procedure, and then sewn back in. It truly did come back to me in pristine condition, and I would not hesitate to go this route again.

Interesting thoughts on all of that, John. One thing I do find is that, for indoor shots, it helps to use a telephoto setting and to move back away from the hat for the photo. This way, the flash does not wash out the hat's color. That's how the indoor photos of the Whippet in this thread were done.

Hi, Tony -- and many thanks! The Whippet ad and the Playboy ad are both from 1945. The Lancer ad is from 1949. And you're right, you just gotta love the duds! In the Playboy ad, I'm lovin' the brown tweed jacket paired with the green tie -- a classic autumn look. BTW, I agree that the Playboy ad certainly makes "bash" seem mighty appropriate. ;)

My collection is still relatively small compared to that of many Loungers, I'm sure -- but I am really happy with the way it is coming together. It would not have been possible without all of the valuable input and information freely shared by all of the good folks right here on the Lounge. :eusa_clap

I have that hat... well, it's a Royal Stetson but, it looks the same! Same ribbon and same green! I believe it was my second or third vintage fedora!

Love the color... green is keen!;)

Thanks, Tony.

Forgotten Man -- I think a Stetson Playboy (or its Royal Stetson equivalent) like the one in the ad would be absolutely killer. Good for you! You should post a photo if you get a chance.

Cheers,
