On Hiatus. Really. Or Not.
Saw an interesting movie on TCM last night...

"The Show" from 1927. Silent film with a new score.

What was most interesting was that one of the main characters (John Gilbert as "Cock Robin" a circus sideshow "magician") had on what looked like a WIDE BRIM porkpie! It seemed to have a leather band (or maybe a bad ribbon). It looked extremely cool.

I thought porkpies were from a later era.

Anyone have any photos or examples from other films?

This is a VERY early picture of Buster Keaton with a Porkpie.

I believe the style goes back to the late eighteen hundreds. They were popular in the twenties with wide brims, often pinned up in front as worn by the college kids.

Late 1800s is correct reetpleat, but the "boom" ( if you can call it that) was in the teens, then again in the late twenties through the thirties. They've been around for a long time Zemke!! Keaton was a good example but he wore them so high on his head as to make them comical. I think that might have lessened the overall popularity. Not everyone wanted to look like a comic.
