Wide Brim Fedoras

For me the wider the better. I have a hat that has a 4" brim but it is more in the cowboy hat configuration. Dress hats can go up to 3 1/4" as far as I am concerned---then again I am in that 6' and weight class so the wide brim fits the rest just fine. ;)
Oh and that hat from Van Helsing is actually not felt. I think someone here mentioned that it is really leather with decorative stitching.

Regards,

J

Wide brims are all that seem to work for me. The widest I have at the time being is 3 inches (not much, but enough).

Typically I find that anything under 2 1/2 inches makes me look like a jackass.

Well, I am a FULL BODIED MAN myself and I even wear a 5" Plantation Hat from time to time.
And Yes, the V.H. is leather but I was looking at the effect.
I had hoped I could get some of our members to show us their WIDE brimed hat (non-western). to see just whats being worn out there.
come on Guys show me your Hats......

The brim needs to compliment the crown too. A big, tall, straight crown generally "needs" a bit wider brim, whereas a somewhat smaller crown looks better with a narrower brim. Normally, on an "Indy-sized" hat, I think 2 3/4" is about perfect on me, with 2 1/2" bare minimum. 3" (generally) looks too big on me...or at least it begins to no longer look like a Fedora. The little straw hat in my avatar (a Bailey Lite Straw that got somewhat crushed in my recent auto accident....:rage: ) has a 2 3/8" brim, that I think looks pretty good on me, but the crown is not nearly of Indy/Federation/Bushman/Squatter proportions. (by the way, I just ordered a Squatter from David Morgan AND another Federation from HatsDirect, both in "Tawny fawn". I wish I could get brown...I mean REAL brown, like a Hershey bar, not dark, grayish brown, but it seems no one makes felt this color anymore!)

I seem to remember there used to be a rule that the width of the hat brim should compliment the width of the suit lapel, wide with wide and narrow with narrow.

As far as head size, I am a 7 5/8, 6', 250lb Guy. I guess I was thinking of something like this:
Tinman Monster Hunter.;) ;) ;)
I will try to re shape it myself and if that fails I will call in the pros from Dover.

But if I were going to wear it, I would really need a dark and stormy night, and a Transylvanian landscape . . . a couple of monsters to fight wouldn't hurt either . . . and really, how often am I going to find myself with those conditions?;)
