Recently i've been looking online at fedoras at the fedora store, bencraft, etc. I've also been lookin' at hat stores in NYC, near Hell's Kitchen b/c on Saturday I'll be flyin' out for a visit. But there is one thing that I notice out of all of the hats i see, the hat i tend to like always comes in wool instead of fur, and it's DRIVING ME NUTS. I looked at http://www.ahat.com/fedoras.htm, it's a hat store in Hell's Kitchen. If you take a look at the site, the hat i like is the gray wool one in the top right, and that's the problem.....it's wool! Also whenever i DO find a fur felt hat i like, it doesn't come in the color or type of the color i want it in. It might just be that I'm picky, but it might not. Comments?

The price tells you the reason why. $40.00 will not buy you a quality hat. It will get you a nice looking wool repro look a like. If you want a quality fur felt fedora you are going to have to raise the price bar and be willing to spend a few hundred dollars.
Or you could try to get an Akubra fedora from hatsdirect.com that sells decent off the shelf fur felt fedoras.

I understand that i will need probably atleast $100 to buy a decent quality hat and i am prepared to do so. My problem is that whenever i find a hat that looks quality enough to me, i can't find the dark grey color i want.

Akubra is a great hat...

Ok then.
Try a Akubra Federation in grey and crease/bash it yourself.

....well...that's one of the reasons I like using ebay. I don't know what your size is, and that has a lot to do with price, but I've purchased four really nice FELT fedoras all for under thirty-dollars each. Heck my Lee stingy was only $15.00, with shipping!

Granted, they're a size seven, which makes them very inexpensive, and a couple are stingy brims, also inexpensive, but for fifty bucks including shipping you should be able to find what you want. Be careful to look for things like NIB, NOS or LIke New, or Never Worn.

I always ask the seller if the hat has any "rips, holes, tears, stains or odors", and then I copy and past they're reply in the NOTE section MY EBAY. That way if there ever is a problem I can always use their own words to argue my case.

Granted it's a crap-shoot, but I like to compare hat buying on ebay to having babies:

you may have an idea of what you're getting, but you're never really sure until you lay eyes on it. It might not be perfect, but in the end you grow to love it.

I find the searching, bidding and most of all, the arrival at my front door to be a very good experience AND HALF THE FUN. Then, you get to wear it!

I am still very "green" to the hat world, so my opinions are "green" also...I have heard many things against wool and for fur. I started with wools due the price tag and bought a fur as a gift for friend. I will purchase a fur soon to compare, what should you look for in a fur to ensure it is the right quality for the price? sorry UFguy if:eek:fftopic: just curious

another link

I agree with Sharpetoys. That guy has more links and pictures than anyone else around here! He's a book of knowledge. I'll always cast my vote for Akubra.

Having said that, I'll cast another vote (OK, call me a liar! lol ) for a line of hats Duane has started carrying. They look pretty darn good and for $120-$140 you could just about design the hat just the way you want it. It's the Beaver Brand. Don't freak when you see wool.... go down to the bottom of the page and you'll see some real nice fur felt fedoras that look just like the one that's your favorite.

I do own an Akubra. I do not own a Beaver Brand... yet! Ultimately, one of these days I bet you'll end up with a custom made hat from one of the great hatters here at the lounge.
