Why were the 70s such a tacky decade?

I felt very very sorry for our high school's Class of '76. They were forced to march in Uncle Sam-style gowns, with stars on the shoulders and red and white stripes down the length of the garments. The Buy-centennial was when I first realized that the Boys From Marketing had no sense of shame.

It was everywhere that is for sure. Even the local government here painted the fire plugs red, white and blue. Totally stupid and waste of money. Lol lol lol

As far back as the 1920s a movie studio head reprimanded a publicity agent for carrying out a publicity stunt that he felt was in bad taste.

The publicity man resigned his position.

A well known newspaper columnist backed him up, saying the movie studio was wrong, and that a publicity agent who worried about bad taste, would be as out of place as a general who fainted at the sight of blood.

If you think 1976 was tacky, go read about 1876, it was tacky on steroids! Want to buy George Washington's ax, no, then how about a peace of his body!

There was optimism?! Where were you? Definitely not in the gas lines, not in t large unemployment lines, not in th grocery lin paying crazy inflated prices wih less money, not in the military though Nam etc., etc.
The 80s WAS the optimism that we didn't want to look back on the filthy 70s.

I never sat in a single gas line, that was for the coasties! No one I know was unemployed, jobs were easy to get, and at good pay. The 80s was just hype, it started us down the path of cynicism we have today. As for the military, don't forget the pore Marines and Navy Corp Men in Beirut, who weren't even allowed to lode their rifles to protect them selves! The nation has forgotten them, I never can.

A few years back, in honor of the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, some baseball card company put out a card with an encapsulated strand of old Abe's hair. The Ghouls From Marketing strike again.

Around here, the '80s were nothing more than the '70s with bigger shoulder pads. As far as the economy went, it was same spit, different spitter.

The whole country sat in gas lines thanks to some idiot politicians idea of conserving. You just don't remember.

You must have also been in some other world as well when it came to employment as the graph I posted before showed how unemploment was super high---along with inflation. The 80s saw a decrease in all of that---based on facts and figures.
I would remind you we also got the hostages out of Iran---that went in in the 70s.

Released in Jan of '81..as I remember.

Exactly!

But only like 40 of them in the 70's, as compared to 400 in the 80's. Either way, I'm not sure how you can pin it on "the 70's".

It was just ONE of many things that stunk back then. All together it paints a picture of an era that is just tacky and horrible. Obviously you haven't been paying attention. How many gas lines did you sit in in the 1980s and on and on. Gee, Granada was just as bad as Vietnam right? Over 13% inflation was just as bad as 6% right? Double digit unemployment is better than single digit right? 20% interest rates are better than 10%. The stock market losing 40% of value in 18 months is better than it leveling out right? Monetary policy was so out of whack in the 70s that it ruined lives. Add in the ugly clothing, appliances, accessories and you have the 70s apocalypse that many want to forget and run away from.

But we had Charlie's Angles. Seeing Cheryl Ladd in that bikini made up for any minor inconveniences like inflation, unemployment, gas lines, etc.

I'm was trying to get into the oil business in the 80's, and there were no jobs. I couldn't afford gas, line or no line. One's perspective of the 80's vs the 70's vis a vis gasoline depends on which side of the supply chain you were.
