Buzz Ricksons is my favourite, very affordable and great quality. Buy direct from Japan from stores that ship internationally like Hinoya or Bears (free shipping), got 2 pairs for $140 from local Australian retailer, and another pair for $70 shipped from Japan.

Hinoya (reasonable international shipping rates)
1942 (widest/straightest/metal repro buttons): https://hinoya.shop/en/products/m43036?_pos=2&_sid=7c8316384&_ss=r
1945(straight, metal repro buttons): https://hinoya.shop/en/products/m43035?_pos=3&_sid=7c8316384&_ss=r
Original Spec (slim, mid rise, zip fly): https://hinoya.shop/en/products/br40025a?_pos=1&_sid=7c8316384&_ss=r

Bears (free international shipping over 15,000 yen which these qualify for)
Original Spec: https://bears-tokyo.myshopify.com/products/buzz-ricksons-br40025a-original-spec-chino
Good post…some nice looking trews & shouldn’t break the bank either…

Outside of MASH I haven‘t traded with Japan but the costs don’t appear as prohibitive as feared, wonder what things would look like with any UK import tax and shipping added….

As memory serves, if you hit the threshold for import tax, the UK adds about 4.5% on to the total (purchase price plus declared shipping cost), then the VAT at the appropriate rate is levied on top of that. It seems to vary (also varies whether they apply it; sometimes you can get lucky, though that no longer happens, ever, with stuff coming in from the US).

Sometimes some sellers will write things on the package which minimizes or exempts you from paying any sort of tax or duty. Which is nice, though if HMRC catches anyone inciting that or knowingly receiving something where the declaration for tax purposes is deliberately mislabelled in order to avoid a charge, that is regarded as evasion and frowned upon.

Worth calculating the cost. It does often ultimately work out cheaper than buying from a reseller over here, but obviously the flipside is the hassle of returning if it doesn't suit / doesn't fit.

I'm still holding out hope that one day I'll get the chance to go to Tokyo with work again (I could have done in 2002, but it clashed with my brother's wedding, so...), and I'll just fly there with an empty suitcase. (And probably back again with an empty suitcase given sizing, but hey ho - I can dream!)

There are many online stores available that carry a variety of colors and styles, so you can find the perfect pair that suits your style and needs. But while buying check whether they use only the finest fabrics and craftsmanship to ensure chinos are comfortable and durable. Plus, check they offer free shipping on all orders or not, so it's easy to get your new favorite chinos delivered right to your door.

Came here to post this. With the low yen, Rickson's is a no-brainer.

And I'll add that 'original spec' while trimmer than the 42/45, is by no means a slim trouser. It's just narrower than those two. The rise is nicely high, too.

I'm fully in the straight fit/wide leg camp now so to me my Original Spec feels like maybe a "straight taper", kind of like how 1966 jeans are straight fit with leg taper. I also feel like the rise is not high enough for my personal taste, it sits at the hip or just above, while my 1942 sits right at my natural waistline.

My Original Spec is still by far my most worn because it is very gray man, and doesn't look too far out the norm from regular modern trousers.

Maybe it depends on the sizing. My pair, in olive, is perhaps a size bigger than it needs to be.

I almost exclusively wear straight/wide legs.

I like the wide early look & then a pair of narrower trews with turn up for the summer to be worn sockless with deck shoes.

I don't think they make the "best chinos" but the bang for buck is excellent:
https://eight-g.shop/ja-ch/products/304-cn

thanks to @58panheadfan for the hint!

Some of these chinos from eight-g looks pretty good.
Could you please share some more feedback?
- How heavy is the fabric (I like heavy twill 15oz or higher would be great).
- How was the shipping/customs duties (I am based in Europe)
- Any shrinkage on the fabric after wash?

Many thanks in advance -mJay

It's not that heavy. Don't know the ounces but size W38 L34 is 654g.
Shipping was fast (the next day after ordering). Shipping costs for 2 trousers was 5500 Yen.
No japan duties, just the duties in my country (Switzerland).
No shrinking after some washes.
