I know there are others on the list doing the same or similar things that I am- let's see pics and start a discussion.

Here's my latest, jacket number 3.

Can't answer your question, fishmeok, but man, I'm really diggin' your jackets. This is No. 3, you say? Went quicker than the previous two, I'm guessing?

What kinda leather is this one?

This is based on Deckard's coat from Blade Runner. I lengthened it because we get wind with rain here and a regular trench coat left the back of my calves wet.

I started this during my brief stint in the SCA. I still need to line it and I want to add two more fasteners.

I made this jacket for Halloween this year.

I like it- what kind of machine do you use? I went through a bunch of home sewing machines I found a 70+ year old industrial that will actually sew leather. Still having trouble with it though- I'm kind of pushing it's abilities (and mine).

Just plain cow- but unlike jacket #1 I made sure to check out a sample BEFORE I bought the hide, won't make that mistake again...

The leather jacket was done on a Husqvarna, but it really struggled. With the Deckard coat most of the work is done on an old Montgomery Ward Model E , probably about the same age as your industrial machine. For the button holes I borrowed the Husqvarna again. The lower Halloween coat was done entirely with the Montgomery Ward.

Does your machine do zig-zag and reverse? Mine is straight stitch, forward only.

Man, you just make me feel inadequate. Probably some other guys on this forum as well.

Do you get a lot of incredulous looks when you tell somebody that you actually made the jacket you're wearing? I mean, who makes their own leather jackets? Who makes their own anything??!!

What an awesome heirloom to pass along to your kids. Not just a jacket that you used to wear long ago, but a jacket you made. That's a real treasure.

I went through most of the home machines of the '40's and '50's- Singer, White,Kenmore, Necchi, etc. before I lucked out and stumbled on my Singer 78-3 walking needle, originally made to sew auto tops in the '30's. Straight stitch, no reverse. It still struggles in some areas (topstiching around the collar, in particular) but for what I have into it the thing works pretty well and it has a very long arm which helps a lot. I also have a Necchi BU I do non-jacket stuff on, and a couple other old machines. I finally listened to John Chapman and gave up on trying to do this on a home machine, even the old all-metal models just will not cut it. I need to find something that does button holes though, sooner or later i am going to want to try them on a jacket.

Very nice- I used to paint jackets about 20 years ago, but stopped for some reason. Do you use acrylics?

Yes acrylics it is. Only paint that is flexible enough. I paint them on occasion, as they are ordered, but wouldn't want to do just jackets all the time I think. I like to be versatile.
The latest jacket looks awesome! :eusa_clap I expect number 4 will be about perfect. Keep up the good work. Maybe I can order myself one soon??? :)
