And it takes finding the right color.
I also hear people saying it looks bad on them, and no evidence in pictures... show us how it looks bad, maybe we can help...
But really, if you are trying to do a Golden Era look, without lipstick you are just not going to look right. You don't have to do it for everyday...
I personally NEVER leave the house without it unless I am like, jogging... since I was 15. People do not recognize me without it, I get all pale and lost looking.

on the devil's advocate side...

There are tons of pictures of -normal- average ladies, who did not not have red lipstick, or any color for that matter, as part of their -everyday- look.

It thus all depends on what you are trying to look like.

There were shortages of things...so wartime UK, you might not have -had- anymore lipstick...or shared with your friends for the 'evening out' scenario but thats it.

Sure, the stereotypical 'vintage' look that we all fixate on today has the red lipstick, but it was by no means across the board.

Having bare lips on an otherwise beautiful woman, neatly dressed and coifed, is hardly comparable to 'bad hairdo's and ugly dresses'.

There is no -requirement- to recreate a particular lip color in order to be 'vintage'.

I didn't know Body Shop did stains. Next stop Sauchiehall Street. I think the older your skin gets (44 actual years then add a few) the more you need to adapt what you're wearing. I was reading recently that older skins need more 'dewy' make up. I think my skin came with me from a previous life. It needs panstick, cake powder, and I really am going to investigate the Mineral bases! Thanks!!!

Love the idea of the lip liner. I haven't needed it yet to avoid bleed lines, but I hadn't tried it to increase the lip line. Tried it with subtle effect, and it worked! Needs a really steady hand and good appreciation of artistic licence v real life, but I think this works.

In our favourite period they just went for it and plucked, or not, then drew it back in, blonde and brunette. Bit harsh under today's lights. I use brunette eye pencil (strangely it's the only shade that works for my strawberry blonde with a ton of white!) and put that pencil on big time, brush it through, then wipe it off to desired shape and shade. But what happens when I hit 60?!!!!

Can we open a thread about the changing make up needs of ladies as the decades pass, and with a nod to the decades previous?

You should get your eyebrows professionally tinted. I have a friend with almost blonde eyebrows and she gets them tinted a subtly darker brown shade. You would never guess that it wasn't natural but it makes a HUGE difference to her face. If you don't like wearing foundation then penciled in eyebrows can look a bit fake on natural skin so it's a good compromise.

I think often times we don't think we look good in certain colors or certain makeup products, like lipstick, because we aren't used to seeing ourselves with them on our face. I used to never wear lipstick and felt I looked weird with it on, like people were staring at me oddly. But it was because I wasn't used to it. But now I almost always have some color on my lips and feel it actually enhances my look and makes me look more finished.

I think there's a lipstick out there for everyone and it's all about finding the right shade and texture for your lips. It can take getting used to seeing it on your face if you've never worn it before but if it's right for you that feeling will soon pass and you'll wonder how you went without! Also remember it doesn't necessarily have to be a lipstick if you really don't get along with it. There are many formulas out there for you to try such as glosses, stains, balms aswell as different textures such as matte lipsticks, shiny lipsticks, sheer lipsticks and so on. It's all about personal preference. For example, I wear red lipstick all of the time and can't use glosses as they bleed everywhere but one of my friends can't stand the texture of lipstick and prefers glosses. They don't bleed on her at all and she uses a stunning rich red from Dior.

When I was in my early teens I made up my eyes heavily, lots of liquid liner, (still do) but a netural lipstick. I felt colour made me stand out, but once I found the right range of colour I've never looked back. When we say "Red" I think bright blue/red jumps to mind but there are so many shades and through trial and error you will find one for you. I never leave the house with out full make up, I would scare dogs and small children and I would hate to scare dogs lol lol lol

your right miss 1929!!!!!, to truly capture vintage Glam, you really need to wear Lipstick....may it be bright red or Coral!a true glamour girl cant leave home without it!

I just picked up the sheer lipgloss from burts bees the other night and love it! I mean I love my lipstick but this color was perfect for theose days were you want color but not th hassle of touching up you lipstick. I got the color called coffee. On it looks like an everyday burgandy.

Foundation

I don't wear foundation as I am extremely pale and it looks a bit ridiculous. I do, however wear tinted moisturiser from Boots, in 'fair' and an almost white powder to stop my face from going all shiny, all on top of Boots shine reducing day moisturiser. I have quite uneven skin and would never dream of leaving the house without my face on!!! (Plus people always ask me if I'm ill - I really am that pale...)

I love wearing lipstick but I feel very self conscious when wearing it, plus I have to check & re-apply all the time, again, because I get so nervous when wearing it!!! Can anyone reccommend a brand that will stay put? It's so confusing buying makeup!

I'v also discovered the beauty that is the eyebrow pencil. I've since dicovered that my evebrows are not even, one of them arches in a James Bond-esq manner, while the other one is just straight lol

In my experience glosses and stains disappear off my lips in 10 minutes whereas sometimes I can go through a whole day without having to re-apply lipstick at all. Even if you do have to re-apply it's usually only after you eat something. The texture does make a huge difference. I have a shiny moisturising one that comes off as soon as I drink a cup of coffee but most others do last. Each to their own! [huh]

1. Use a lip liner pencil, in the same color.
2. Fill in with your lipstick, blot.
3. Powder with your face powder (I like to use a cotton pad for it so it won't collect lipstick and transfer it onto the face)
4. Another layer of pencil
5. Another layer of lipstick, blot.

It stays on really well through the whole day, unless you eat something oily! Even then you will probably only have to redo the center, the liner should stay put.
