I haven't been in Chicago since September of 1979. The best part about being poor in a city like that is you get to live in the best houses--but 50 years too late. The apartment I grew up in had a butler's pantry, built-in glass-front china buffets in the kitchen, wood floors, a foyer with an arch, the old bath with clawfoot tub, the building had a courtyard, and my school was designed by one of Frank Lloyd Wright's partners. You don't get that kind of thing in Tennessee.
