Whippets

When was the whippet first introduced? I found one today. It is tan and 7-1/4 long oval intact although it has shrunk a bit.No holes, rips or moth damage. It is however very well worn and very soiled. It has the older style Stetson yellowish liner with out the Whippet printed on it nor does it have a sweat sheild. The sweat band has the Whippet embossed at the front of the sweat which I have not seen before.
Does anyone have one like this?

JtL, It is about that color But the binding and ribbon both are the same color as the hat body. I will need to find a price tag.

Douglas -- the above ad touts the Whippet as "light in weight" (it also has a Mode Edge). Another 1940 ad introduces The Whippet as Stetson's newest "Crushweight." What's the felt on yours like?

I have one that looks pretty old to me.
Reorder number 560626. Felt is a creme
or straw color, which might kinda match
the ad, but the binding and ribbon match the felt.
It is not blocked with the low front.
No price tag.

The sweatband does not say Whippet.
The front of the sweatband says "Gold Medal".
The liner says Whippet and appears to
be original. No plastic on the liner, just
that perforated material they used before plastic
(which I much prefer but admit is more difficult
to clean). It has a sweat shield. I doubt they'd
describe mine as light weight.

On looking at that ad again, I gotta say that's
an odd bash. I might have to try dents like that.

Well, I would not consider mine as light weight either. The Flagship Art had restored is the closest in feel and this one is more of a medium weight although it is quite soft. It has a similar type of liner to the Flagship,high quality satin that is golden yellow in color. I will have pics on Monday. This one has a diamond bash with a very pronounced high pinched front crown raked to a low rear.
It really astounds me the variation in style and treatments given to a particular model. It almost seems as though they were experienting to see which would get the most attention from the public before they committed to a standard type.

That bash - and i can think of no more appropriate hat to describe as having a "bash" - is remarkable. If i recall correctly, DOUGLAS, you are (like me) a devoteé of the "whatever shape it wants to assume, that's the shape it's gonna have" school of vintage hat wearers. Great stuff.

I love it, thanks for this post as the Whippet is a hat I have longed for but so far has been out of my reach.

RBH, This one will need some work before it is wearable but it was only $8.50
so I couldn't refuse.

Life is right BK, It has seen the otherside for sure. Yes I will absolutely keep the bash the way it is. It seems it would have taken a while for someone to create this indelible inprint onto this hat,it wouldn't feel right me changing it.

As a matter of fact that is were it is right now. Everyone knows me around here even the street guys. If someone tried to steal it from my car I would know before they could get their hand out from the window.

I've got a steel-gray Whippet with lighter gray brim edging, and a black ribbon; bought it perfect, wear it maybe 3 times a yr. keep it in da box.
Vintage piece-50's according to the sales slip that came with it (!)
and smmmooooth / crisp at the same time; really holds the snap-brim,
teardrop crease, and the brim stays nice and even, no waving.

Never seen another for sale outside of OFAS or the Lounge-really elusive little devils. But worth it -Douglas, that's going to be some looker when you get done with it- like to see the photos...

I too have a gray one with matching brim binding and black ribbon in perfect condition. I don't wear it often. The Whippet for all its fame is not my favorite style. I prefer an unbound edge.

When the tan one is cleaned I will surely share the photos.
