seems like the last few larger vintage hats have been going sky high....now they are in the custom range. You guys with the smalller heads sure are lucky.

Art can fix those moth holes to the point of you not even knowing they were ever there. You should ahve seen waht he did to a Mallory Twenty of mine a few years ago. Anyhow, it's a unique hat and I know the guy who got it, he's no fool at all.

There's a limited number of old hats out there, and with more and more people wanting them, the price is bound to escalate, especially for those more desirable models, such as the Whippet. To get a new hat of that quality, you'd just about have to go the custom route, which would cost you even more. I look at it this way: For about the same money, I could buy two new pieces of #&%@ Stetsons. I'd rather have one old one.
And take a look at that color! And that ribbon and edge binding! It's a very, very nice hat, and I'd wager that he could sell it for as much or more than he paid.

With this hat at the current price paid plus postage to his house, then on to Art's and back, plus Art's fees for cleaning, reblocking, and mabye a new sweat and ribbon, it would probably a tad more, say by about $30, than waht you'd pay fora new custom hat by Art. AND I think he charges $275 if I'm not mistaken. Art, if you're reading this please correct me if I'm wrong here as I don't wish to speak out of line. I'm just going off my memory of what you've charged me recently to make all my vintage hats look new off the shelf from your local Hatter circa 1940-something. :arated:

The pressure of C U L T S T A T U S H A T S! You know it, I know it, and yes even "They" know it. There are some models of vintage hats that have obtained an aura of celebrity and desire for the hat guys. The Whippet, the Playboy, the Stratoliner, the Open Road and others are greatly desired because in many years of production they have been produced with a great design and features that makes them so fabulous to own and wear.

So they or them (depending on your grasp of the English language) are out there willing to bid on the good stuff, driving up prices and making it miserable for the average collector of lower means. But take heart, with a little luck the amount of hats tucked away in closets and attics has not been taped out and the quantities will continue to dribble in daily, weekly, monthly for years to come.
What the market will bear changes over time, sometimes abruptly and sometimes even in the buyers favor. But if it is in a color you've never seen before, watch out!

Somebody posted a pix of a Stetson Floridian that was way cool a few weeks ago, it was really nice.

It 's a very cool hat great color and such, but.....ouch! For a few dollars more I'd like to talk to Art Fawcett, maybe. Then again if you have the means, and/or your heart is set on something. I know that I have kicked myself a number of times for missing out on a few different items, so I can understand.

So far the record was a gray Stratoliner that went for $530. last year and that is in the Stratosphere. People have finally wised up to the fact that vintage is better and are now paying new prices for something old that is better than new anyway. Or something like that.

Art and Fedora (Steve Delk) offer the best you can buy new at about the same price of what is now becoming a reality on ebay---the 2 to 3 hundred dollar vintage fedora, but without the gamble that it could be a dud when you get it in the mail.

This was comparably cheap though.
Whippets are one of my favorite hat styles. I did wear my Stratoliner out into the rain today though. I don't think I depreciated it any though. :cheers1:

That is exactly why I couldn't let the Blue Open Road go. It was too unique to pass up.
