From terms of quality of construction, and quality of the leather, my U.S. Wings Signature G-1 is hard to beat. It is actually the USCG issue jacket. I was advised that it is actually made by Schott. Slightly better overall than my G&B jacket.

Just out of interest how does the USCG US Wings compare sizewise to the current issue Excelled please? I have a 40" which is a perfect fit but dont the US Wings run a bit large?

I wear a 40R or 42R. The US Wings is a 44R. The fit is good, but a bit longer than I like in the back and sleeves. These do run small.
Excelled runs large. I have their A-2 in a 38R.

Cheers!. I have an Excelled A2 also. That is a 38"" as the 40" is too large but in the G1 the 40" is spot on and the 38" too small. Weird. So would you go for a 40" in the US Wings?

In their Signature G-1? Because they are all different. I would try a 42.

Yes Signature series. They claim they are the only suppliers to the USCG . I thought that all G1s come through the same system from Pensacola? Or are these private purchases by local USCG stations.

When I was in P-Cola, Coasties got the same USN stamped jacket as everyone else.

I believe that they started buying "premium" jacket for their aircrews at some point from discretionary funds.

I'd like to see the new Excelled. As many know, the Pharr I got as a replace in 2004 was pretty meh in terms of leather and fit.

I would go for a 42. Call them up and ask. They talked me into a 44. Wish I would have taken a 42 instead. Great G-1.

That Excelled can be bought for $232. USA made, free shipping. The only reason I did not buy it was the fake fur.

I have several Excelled G1s DSCP ones all in 40" and fit perfect. Dated 1999, 2001 and 2008. Also have a 2004 Pharr. Quality i cant fault. Better then the Pharr which is nice but not as nice as the Excelled.

Re phoning US Wings i am UK based so not that easy but am Stateside in the summer so will do that then. If the fit is not good a bit of a pain to send back and get another.

Thanks for the replies

nice, more likely to be cowhide than goatskin, I have Pharr issue G1 and it's also a size 48" but fits like a 46" in the body but too long on the sleeves, it's well constructed but lacking in material quiality and it's made from cow.

I have cowhide jackets that are every bit as nice as my goat skin jackets. Excelled uses cowhide, and it is a bit heavier (thicker) than my other jackets.
