Keep the old. The Dukes hair is rather mangey looking. Most barbers were just not as good back then. Seems the art of barbering did not really come into it's own until the invention of electric clippers. The lack of technology in the 19th century seems to have made for a lot of bad haircuts. Hairstyles depicted in paintings and photos from this century and those prior are usually quite awful. :eeek:

If you like the Duke's hairstyle, you could emulate it or take in some inspiration from it if you want. It doesn't look that bad, maybe a bit unkempt by early to mid 20th century standards, but the 19th century was a different time. Men's hair during that century was generally a little more full or longer, and for lack of a better word, "wilder" looking at times. The early 20th century, up to some point in the 1950s primarily emphasized a closely slicked down, almost "plastered" looking appearance. The slick back can look great though.

For your age, either one could work. People may see your Duke of Wellington haircut as being more akin to a modern fashion, though, rather than the very traditional image associated with slick backs or slicked, parted hairstyles.

Or maybe George Washington from the 1 dollar bill. :p
Probably one of the worst haircuts ever. :eeek:

Hmm, but it looked good on him though:

Maybe President Washington was the only man to look convincing wearing his hair that way, though. Well certainly during his own time, but I mean in today's lens.

That could maybe be called a short back and top??
Meaning no disrespect toward our founding father of course,..but his do is maybe in need of an update.
Maybe a sort of pomp with shortened sideburns?

But look at Andrew Jackson on the 20 dollar bill,..he had some cool hair!

I was going to say the same, Tom: keep the sideburns long and shaggy (that's basically how I'm attempting to grow mine, they're 3 inch ones a bit below the ear), but have a slick, Elvis Presley styled pompadour (circa 1955/1956?).

Or, a simple side-part will do, while we're going over the modern Washington image...

But look at Andrew Jackson on the 20 dollar bill,..he had some cool hair!

Yeah, he sure did, huh? It was wild, but looked good on him. Wasn't this a sort of fashion from the early-mid 19th century anyway?

I voted earlier but didn't comment. I think that the Victorian style looks more like the result of not getting your hair cut than actually being a haircut. I would stick with something a bit neater, and let it get wild as it grows out.

Another gal's 2 pence: stick with the slicked short back and sides. The 'do of the Duke, funnily enough, looks pretty "now", and this is not a compliment. He looks like he's not bothered to go for a decent cut for an age and hasn't seen the business end of a grooming implement for as long. Please, don't do it!
