Ingrid Bergman (I have watched Saratoga Trunk a couple of times...), Cary Grant (I suffered through Kiss them for Me...), Jean Gabin (some bad 1960s films...), Louise Brooks (some mediocre silents...), and some others...

 

[The Good]

Maybe not a creative choice, but I would say Humphrey Bogart. I have seen a few of the films he was in, and he was great during every performance. Bogart's one of my favorite actors. Other possible candidates include John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Cagney, also great actors.

^^Edmond O'Brien adds "flavor" to whatever film he's in (DOA is his showcase); I can watch almost anything he's done from about 1945 to 1955. Mitchum is an icon, as are Widmark, Tierney, and Scott (she's still around kickin') in the Film Noir hall of fame. Baseheart did some great roles in the years just after WWII (check him out in The Black Book).

2 years too late on the reply, but if have to agree with William Powell- I've yet to find moments his movies I don't enjoy, especially with Myrna Loy as a co-star.

Cary Grant; and Ginger Rogers. I'd never realized until I'd seen more of her movies that she was more than a dancer, but a comedienne as well. (I've never caught her dramatic roles.) Grant and Rogers together in Monkey Business -- dynamite.

Just watched "Having Wonderful Time" yesterday with Ginger Rogers (and Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Jack Carson and Red Skelton). Rogers shines in a not great movie, Fairbanks is wooden and Skelton was so cheesy Vaudeville that I had to fast forward through his scenes that were really routines. (Will cross post an expanded comment to the "What is the Last Movie..." thread.)
