The only shops in my area of Ohio are one charity shop and Goodwill. I hit each every two weeks, and in over a year of looking, have found exactly zero. I don't mean 'nothing in my size,' I mean nothing at all. Just faded jeans and 70's stuff. Cheap Hagar suits. Ties you wouldn't bury your worst enemy in. Giant women's straw hats. Boxes of beaten up Barbie dolls.
I keep watching for these midwestern gold mines!
Seek and ye shall find.
I have been lucky,(and observant) enough to find no less than 8 different sources for vintage items in my area, however, I have yet to find much of anything in my size, apart from a few ties. In the last year I have found, 1 suit from the thirties, a half a dozen ties, and about 7 or 8 fedoras of various vintages, all of which I re-sold.
I wonder if this is not about the average for other diligent seekers of vintage clothing?
I find lots of women's hats, but I know nothing about them really. Also I see a lot of fur wraps. Kinda creepy looking things which consist of several dead weasels strung together!
Estate sale season is upon us now, and since I have the time I will shop those in earnest. Hopefully I can make some better finds this summer.:)

you also might want to try church sales. i've found a few uniforms that way, and some more modern (50's & 60's) clothing that way...

There is a store called Tangerine Boutique in Gardner, Massachusetts that you may want to check out. She's a fellow Vintage Fashion Guild member. I met her yesterday in person at the Manhattan Vintage Show in NYC. In comparision to the other vendors that were there (80 in all) her pricing was very reasonable.

I went yesterday to check out the fashion trends and to see if I'm stocking the right things and was happy to find pricing and fashion wise I am very competitive.

This is the link to her website which also has her brick and mortar store address as well. Hope this helps!

Viviene, thanks so much for this information!!! I will look for it on google and find out her hours! :eusa_clap

ETA: I see you provided me with a link which I didn't see because I was too excited about the store. ;)

Iowa never had much. I think I bought most of it in the mid '80s and have long since outgrown it all. Most men here bought one shirt or suit when one wore out, then they wore that one out.

Iowa was my gold mine...hundreds and hundreds of neckties, suits, shoes, hats....name it. My mom still keeps sending me more.

I'm sure that Quigley knows about the large Goodwill store in Frederick, Maryland. I've had the pleasure of finding a few choice items there in my visits to my grandmother at Easter and Thanksgiving.

Anyone that is looking for something specific can join and post on the Vintage Fashion Guild board and tell the members there what they are looking for. If a member has what you need they can let you know. Just because it's not in our stores doesn't mean we don't have it. Most of us have a lot more than we have listed at any given moment. Here's the link:

You can also check out the latest fashion trends on the VFG blog on each Tuesday. That link is:

http://vintagefashionguild.blogspot.com/

The site also has a list of VFG members links. Some of the members have brick and mortar stores as well.

Happy hunting!

The few "vintage" stores in the L.A. area are completely overpriced so no wonder they don't sell much. Ebay is about the only bastion of selection at resaonable prices.

Hope this isn't just another dry hole for the gents. Is there any sizable traffic or awareness in that direction? If so I'm on it!

Most of the VFG sellers have at least some mens vintage. There are a few that specialize in menswear. I have some mens items as well.

As I mentioned, if there is something particular you are looking for ask and we can keep our eyes open for it if we don't have it already.

Another venue you can check out is http://specialistauctions.com

Click on clothing and then click on vintage. Once you've done that the categories are self explanatory. Ebay is not the only place to shop and if you are looking for reasonably priced items in comparison to Ebay you'll find it there.

You also have Babylon Mall and Main Street Vintage as well. Hope this helps! :)

Viviene, thank you SO MUCH for the information on the vintage store in Gardner. I went there today and was overwhelmed by the selection. While I was there she was actually going through some of her newer stuff and one was a green taffeta dress from the 30's that was actually breath taking!

She had vintage shoes, but they were all way too small. Interestingly enough, the mens shoes had a better selection and ranged in price from $20 to $50. She had two racks of mens stuff but the suits she had were fabulous and things I never see in thrifts.

Her prices are very reasonable and she is very professional and treats you nicely because she told me she loves her repeat customers. It was definately worth the 50 minute drive and I will probably go back up in 3 weeks if I still can't find anything to wear for a wedding I have in June!

For any of you in Massachusetts or New Hampshire, it would probably be worth your while to check it out!
