Well, I'm in Los Angeles. There's a guy I work with who turned me on to Art Fawcett, and as near as I can tell, we're the only two fedora guys in a workplace with about 600-700 people. But we're working on some converts.

Los Angeles has always been on the leading edge of casual dress for work and I don't see a lot of fedoras out here. But I like it that way.

I just moved to SoCal from the Northeast where I spent most of my life so I still feel like I have a foot in both camps, though the types of hats I prefer now are different than when I was in Boston.

I'm also in the LA area--Long Beach, to be specific--and I see few wide-brimmed fedoras here. Plenty of stingy-brimmed cotton print fedoras on the teen/20-somethings, and some panamas during the warm weather. But also get few strange looks or comments, which is cool.

Where does the Midwest end and the Northeast begin?

I'm originally from SoCal, born in LA and raised in South Gate. I was living near downtown Long Beach on 6th St when I joined the USAF in 1980. I'm now in southern Ohio. Being from SoCal everything else was "East" so I'm not sure which geographic area southern Ohio falls into.

Cheers,
Tom

PS OK, according to a US Census Bureau official map posted on Wikipedia Ohio is in the midwest. I guess I'm in the eastern part of the midwest. [huh]

I am surprised that there have been so few votes from Northeasterners. It is curious how one's preconceptions or expectations can be broken without having existed in the first place.

I am a Pennsylvanian who lives in New York who is seldom out-of-doors without a hat.

New Hampshire: Hat Mecca! We must have some members from Merrimack and North Conway (unlike those shirkers from SOUTH Conway).

I'm out in Los Angeles. I don't usually see anyone wearing any *real* hats unless I go to a vintage store of some sort. I rarely see someone wearing vintage or of good quality. I see lots of *hip* hats though. Its not usually too hot this time of year, so I can wear my felts, I wear a Milan in the Summer and hotter months.

I always wondered how specific "Mid-West" was.
In my search of where Ohio is in the realm of regions, I saw the wiki link, but also this pic:

I guess, in NYC a black hat might have one mistaken for being Jewish (some other thread)...in Ohio, I might not recognize you in your buggy...so I'll look for your scoot.
We could both ride our scoots and stop in for scrapple somewhere and be like the Gen X of the congregation Tom

I had a geography professor in college who referred to Ohio, Indiana, etc. as the mideast part of the US. It certainly is more accurate. The term "midwest" originated when Ohio really was the midwest. BTW, this was one of those small, liberal arts universities in Ohio.
