Where does vintage begin and end for you?

+Yes indeed. Too bad we cannot go digging for vintage together or maybe we would be too dangerous.
Recently I stumbled upon a really good place to get stuff. My honey said I now have a mainline to my addiction.

Oh Foof! We would be so BAD! LOL ...and I promise, the first emerald green beaded cardigan in a size 44 we see is yours!

Rue...you would have loved my Gram. She not only kept the home but she managed the household budget too. That could explain why she was able to shop at one of the best stores in town on a truck driver's paycheck, lol.

Where does vintage begin for me ...

Perhaps it was the fact that I spent much of my childhood with my grandparents, observing their values and outlook on life. They worked hard to get where they were, they stuck together as a couple no matter how many arguments they had (in business and private), both respected each other at all times, as well as they treated those around them with respect.

Quite different to the way it was when I had to move back in with my mother. I never agreed with the way she dealt with life.

When I went through 4 years of vocational training as building draughtperson, I quickly began to dislike modern buildings. This was back in Switzerland. As I spent much of my free time in the alps, I new about all the beautiful, cosy and purpose built old houses.

Ever since moving out from home, I have always lived in old buildings (I prefer the idea of renting, rather than buying, for the time being at least).

Now in the UK, we live in an old house, and the center part of it is over 300 years of age, with addons over the years. It started of as a miners office and was last used as such in 1770.

Therefore, vintage does not stop because I am surrounded by it every day. I will never be agreeable with our current 'fast everything' or shall we call it 'through-away' culture. Fast-food, fast-relationships, cheap bad quality clothing, etc etc ...

I do enjoy gadgets and the internet (I would not be posting here otherwise ;) ). TV is handy but not a necessity.

What I find the most difficult to deal with in the current time is people's inability to hold a conversation, their lack of interest in anything. Their mind switches 'channel's just as if somebody would remote control them. Most people take too much for granted nowadays, partly reason for loss of respect.

And music: to me, a musician is a person that is able to perform on stage, keeping the crowd excited and giving the audience an evening they won't forget.
Most artists that are played on radio nowadays (at least in the UK) have nothing to show appart from a pretty face.

I could go on ...

To me, vintage is an imaginary place in my mind I dive into when I am fed up with my surroundings. Mostly the 30s-40s, but quite often much earlier than that as well. It is a cosy, imaginative, exciting place to retreat to, with values I agree with, with style, music, great art and general excitement and passion about life.

I grew up with parents who collected antiques and sold some on the side. Since I was a toddler I've been going to yard sales, auctions, antique shows, bottle digs etc. So it's always been part of my life. The house always had antiques in it. They bought antique rather than new - beds, dressers, tables, chairs etc. have always been vintage. My dad has always had antique cars. His 1st car in the 1960s was a 1930s Ford. His main car is a new one, because of reliability and mine too, but he has several antique cars.
They never wore vintage clothing, but that's something that I started to mix in with my regular clothing in high school in the 1980s. I house use vintage items and furniture too. The desk my computer is on is an old 1940s kitchen table and the lamp next to it is 1940s too. All of the furniture in my bedroom is old. I use jadite dishes to eat off of. My job for the past 13 years has been selling vintage clothing online and I wear at least 1 item of vintage everyday, even if I'm in new jeans and a tee shirt, I at least use a vintage purse or shoes. Probably 70% of my wardrobe is vintage. It's just always there, it's a natural part of my life.

For me I Literally wake up on a antique rought iron bed frame in a bed room full of antique dressers, scuttle to my kitchen with an antique table, grab my coffee, go to the living room to my antique desk, all in a vintage dressing gown. I am right now in a challenge by my friends to only wear vintage till I run out of clothes to do so. I am on week four, haha, and still going. I wear the hats, gloves, clothes, purses, and would wear the shoes too if I could find them. I live in a really old building, rent. I even carry a hanky and a cigarette case. My place is full of antiques, I wear vintage, my life is truly vintage. I even only read classics. Maybe I take it too far. For me the world we live in annoys me, no manners, too much racket, lack of class.

I dont really collect anything, at least not exhaustively. I get into things and buy enough of what I want to satisfy me, which usually isnt a lot.

Vintage is more of a state of mind for me. While I long for the values of yesteryear, I dont long for all of them. Theres plenty that was wrong during the GA, as well as the good stuff.

Materially, I have some hats, and certain combinations of clothing that when put together, look somewhat vintagey. I also love watches and have a couple of ~125 year old pocket watches. But I dont own any real old stuff, or even replicas, except maybe for a vest and a couple of ties a were designed to look GA. So most of my GA beginning-to-end is state-of-mind.

I tend to wear vintage more when I head out on the town but not so much on an average day but I'm trying to incorporate it more into every day wear. I also try to collect Art Deco furniture and have some lovely pieces but am putting that on hold till we move to a house so we'll have more space for it! I also like to collect small things like old magazines, pulp novels, old books or vintage advertising - anything that tickles me really....

Gilboa,
I can relate to everything you wrote and especially this:

By the way, have you posted your home in the vintage home thread yet? I would love to see it :)

Not really into vintage clothing. Not even hats to be honest! Guesse I am only here for the Irvin flying jackets, WWII aeroplanes, battle of Britain stuff and what have you.
But having said that, I'll also admit that I love reading about it - and suddenly I find myself with a pair of oldstyle glasses, a vintage watch and a fountainpen. Who knows - maybe it is kreeping up on me after all.

Does it end with hats (since that's why this site began)... clothing.... cars.... your home... lifestyle... all of them... some of them? I'm curious!

You ask where does vintage begin and end for you?

and the answer for me is in my mind (inside as oppose to outside if that makes sense for you) >>> books, music...

If i happen to come across a vintage ashtray, or an art deco mirror, an old hat, etc... and it's within what i can afford, and i dont have spend too much energy looking for the object, sure i go for it, why not.

Otherwise, vintage mainly lives in my mind.

a little bit of everything. i haven't been wearing as many hats since my wife convinced me to grow my hair out, but i'm constantly on the look out for vintage/repro shirts/shoes/sneakers/watches. i typically prefer older movies and my default musical choices are rockabilly and early rock'n'roll. i'm 40, and i dress like a kid from the late 50's/early 60's (constantly getting ribbed over my cuffed jeans and half-break or no-break chinos).

I've read that about you and I think it's wonderful that you love it. How could anyone not?! Who knows.... maybe one day it'll sneak up on you like Spitfire ;)

Nothing wrong with cuffed jeans at 40! I wear them with my saddle shoes and I turned 41 today ;)

This is an interesting question. As I look around, the things that I have with me everyday are hats and an art deco key wallet. Most important however, is my love of the history, arts, music, people and the social trends beginning in the 1920's.

Well how could we know till you told us? Happy Birthday, we love to make a big deal around here sometimes if we know. Do hope you had and have a great one. I so wish I was 41 again. I think it is where I would go back to and no earlier if I could.
