Where do you think vintage is more popular?

As a relative newbie to the vintage world, I have noticed that many magazines, clothing sites are in the UK.
What do you think?
Do you think the 'vintage style' is more popular in the UK than in America?
I would love to attend a get-together like they just had in the UK, "The Chaps Olympics"..that would be great!
Or am I just too new to all of this 'wonderful world' and I need to get out more? [huh]

That's how it seems to me, but I live in the mid-Atlantic coast in the U.S. It seems like vintage for where I live (Pennsylvania) is Revolutionary War and Victorian era. I don't see too much Edwardian...and certainly very little interest in the 20s - 40s. Those in CA most likely have a far better chance with things.

I am going to have to say that Vintage is very popular on the west coast, and in Austin as well... so yeah, the U.S of A is the place!

There are a few Lounge members here in the New York area, but their vintage dressing is very variable. But there does seem to be a really big growth in enthusiasm for 20's music, that's puling a lot of people in. Like many places, the 50's look is really popular with a lot of young women. They all tend to look like Betty Page or Donna Reed, but with LOTS of tattoos!

As far as vintage lifestyle and events, California is the place to be. In NYC, it's all about the vintage clothing and collectors, without much emphasis on the lifestyle. Europe, from what I've read, seems to have a nice cross section of both. And Japan, well they do it better than everyone!

Japan has had a longtime love affair with Vintage -- particularly the '50s. I think it's significant because, culturally and socially speaking, the 1950s could be considered modern Japan's coming of age. Beginning with the American Occupation (1945-51), there was a more widespread exposure to American cultural influences by the masses whereas before the war exposure to American and foreign culture was limited to a small minority of intellectuals and to wealthy social elites who had the means to travel to America or Europe. In addition, the '50s was also the beginning of Japan's re-emergence as a world economic power.

I second that and say Canada has the absolute worst, no events, I have only ever once seen a man with a vintage hat and it was only for the

There may be some confusion on this as you need to have 15 posts to become a "Vested" member for the Events section and Private Messages to open up.

THis is only a problem to those that have not hit the magic 15 yet.

As a HINT: if you go into a section like Hats, a post that simply says "Nice Hat!" counts, so it is easy to hit the 15 minimum if you give it a try. Some people seem to think each post must be a carefully crafted thesis on a vintage era topic, but light breezy conversation is good too. We are here to have fun also.

LOL!! Thanks for the tip I am having a blast here, so much info! I didn't mean to sound complaining at all, just have a lousy internet connection, some days merely getting online is hard! But it certainly doesn't give me the desire to move to town..oh, I don't mind visiting my town or even going to SF for the day, but I like my quiet 1940's world!!

I know my home state isn't too hot on the topic, but then again we have farmers that are real vintage and still living it. [huh]

Iowa also has lots of old stuff left over that hasn't been utterly demolished (give it time ), but most anything vintage is a hidden gem. The good news is that you just need to go looking.

Although, Des Moines has always been stuck in the 1980's - so I guess it's hard telling how long vintage things will remain.

I'd have to say Japan dominates the vintage subculture, when you look at the world at large. America has been "anti-fashion" since the late 90's and as a whole has not left that mentality yet. Here laziness and slobbery still rule the day, it's the simplest option.

The subculture is growing stronger though here .

I'm not sure about our friends in Europe or Australia.

In the US, Los Angeles is pretty much the place to be. There is a rather large community here, and lots of places to buy, live and be vintage. But you have to be in Los Angeles so....

San Francisco and the Bay Are are a distant second. Not as large a community, but much better cocktails.

Thank you so much for saying this...I sometimes feel like I'm talkin' to the wall when I say something about it!

I haven't noticed many likeminded folks around here. We went to the local Harley dealer for a 'supposed' bike show and there were about 10 bikes, the rest were cars, the majority were 50's-60's, there were about 100 younger folks from the 'Rockabilly' culture there-alot of them nicely dressed (better than what I see walking around town!) all done up to the nines...but I have never seen another 'period' dresser in town.
