All you ladies seem to have hundreds of pictures saved in your computer, to hand, ladies who blog use cute pictures and pin ups in their posts all the time, do you have resources where you are allowed to use the images? I feel these sorts of things could liven up some of my blog posts and would love to know where you find all of your pictures of olden-day gals and pin ups etc!

Sorry if there is a post on this already, I have no idea what to 'search' for!!

xx

I've saved a lot of pictures from here, blogs (they also got their pictures somewhere, and it was probably from someone else's blog), or searching Flickr or someone's Flickr favorites. You can search Flickr groups for a theme (like 1950s year book photos) and all of the photos there will be relevant, and it'll say on the page whether you can share a particular picture or not (usually you can if you're able to copy some kind of embedding url). When in doubt, credit whomever you took the picture from.

ah thankyou lovelies! i'm really surprised at the amazing response i've had to a quick picture i took. Its funny, my eyes aren't always that colour. Several people have commented on them! maybe it was the flash.

SayCiCi, thankyou, thats a great help! I'm a bit scared of flickr, i can't even figure out how to use photobucket! But i'll go and figure it out in the morning, and peruse to my hearts content! Xxxx

You should always be mindful of copyright before using any image you do not own on your site. In the US, any image (or work in general) published before 1923 is in the public domain, and may be freely used. Any image published before 1964 MAY be in the public domain if the owner did not renew after 28 years. The problem is knowing what has been renewed and what has not.

Recently, there has been at least one company started that is actively looking for copyright infringement on behalf of their clients. Traditionally, if infringement is found, a cease and desist letter is sent to the infringer, but this new company is avoiding all the niceties and suing as a first step. They seem to be targeting bloggers who are copying newspaper content, but if they are allowed to continue, then there will certainly be other groups joining this new trend.

A blogger friend of mine recently wrote to Conde Nast (publisher of Vogue and other magazines) to ask about using images from vintage magazines. She was informed that she had to ask permission EACH TIME she used a Conde Nast photo, and that it took about 1 week for approval.

To make this even more confusing, some copying is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine. This according to Wikipedia, "allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as for commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching or scholarship."

Almost all vintage pin-up art is copyright protected, so you need to be aware before using it.

Old advertisements are not, if used in their entirety, copyright protected, as the original purpose of an ad is to be distributed to the public. The same is true of magazine covers. But editorial content of old magazines IS copyright protected if after 1964, and often before (all the way back to 1923) especially if the magazine is still publishing or was absorbed into a current magazine.

About 95% of the images on my site are mine, made by me, and I have all my pages clearly marked as copyrighted. Still, I find my images, and articles as well, all over the web. I don't mind at all if someone uses my images, but the proper thing is to ask first and to give credit.

I'm also off topic now, but you actually look a bit like Dita von Teese! I hope you like her, because she is pretty.

I second that. You look like Dita now that your hair is black. ;0

Re: images, most people are just taking chances. Doing searches, saving images and using them. Very few people find out whether they are infringing on copyright. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

Agree. Wouldn't the entire Internet be illegal if that were the case [huh]
