Not that I have a sad and lonely life or anything, but....

I was in the Lounge a couple of Friday's ago, in the evening when I know I'm supposed to be out socialising, but I wasn't because I live a gazillion miles from the nearest hub of human socialisation, so I frequent a lovely little bar in my back garden! To the point. Nobody was in the Lounge, so assuming you are all divas and divos of the social event calendar, what is your idea of the perfect social evening, where, when (ie time of year etc), what are you doing, what are you wearing, who is the conversation with and what's the topic, and it could be daytime come to think of it?

Hoping for inspiration! :( :) :D lol

My favorite would be a birthday dance. This is where everyone in the club makes a circle around people who are having birthdays, or are from out of town, or are there for the first time, or have something else to celebrate. If you're in the circle, your partner points to you so that everyone can see who you are, the music begins, and you dance with your partner and anyone else who cuts in. I'd wear my new black skirt and blue sweater. (My birthday is in the winter, so the sweater wouldn't be too hot.)

Second favorite: a potluck with my best friend. We do this pretty often. We get together at my place or hers and we each make one or two dishes. After dinner, we rent a movie or go out dancing.

For me, it is hanging out with good friends. A lot of times it really doesn't matter where we hang out or do, just being together and having great conversation is great. Usually, it's Mrs.MK and if the hubby's around, the Mr., they're a blast to hang out with. :D
I am hoping soon to check out the local swing dances around here...I feel like I need a bit more practicing before hitting the dance floor!

I'll Play Host

At one of those swanky restaurant/clubs where the tables all have white cloths and a lamp in the center, and it seems like all the booths are the semi-circle kind with the red leather upholstery. There are four of us at my table, not necessarily couples, and other friends are at other tables nearby and it seems like people are getting up a lot to go blurt out something hilarious at another table before returning for another sip of Manhattan.

Everyone is smoking and there are ashtrays with lipstick-marked butts. There is a band and dancing in another part of the club but we're having so much fun we're in no hurry to get there. The men are all in nice double breasted suits, or maybe white dinner jackets - can't decide. The ladies in swirly skirt dresses that move a lot and all the ladies make their dresses look Drop Dead Halston perfect, they are so lovely and happy.
The whole atmosphere is grown up, flirtatious, fascinating and "let this night never end."

Scotrace, pleeeaase reserve me a place at a table! :D And Paisley I love the pot luck night, that sounds like fun. I should've posted my own really shouldn't I. Ok, here goes.

It's winter, and of course there's deep snow everywhere. We're all away skiing, skating, snowboarding, and the day is beautifully crisp and clean. The winter sun is hot and the mountains majestic. About 3 or 4 pm we shoooshhh in off the final run and park up the skis outside a fabulous tavern with seating outside. We're all dressed in the most perfect 30s and 40s vintage ski wear of course, and everyone is rosy cheeked and exhilarated. Hot wine all round, and loads of chat about the day, the slopes, the mishaps. The sun goes down and the evening moves to the cold of snow and we all retire briefly to shower (not all together necessarily, but let your mind go where it will :D ), and dress for dinner. Cue Scotrace's scenario, but in the winter apline setting with an open fire in the adjacent lounge, and port and whisky till the sun rises again over the mountaintops. Sigh...

Dingy bar (you know the type: Bar down one side, tables down the other, toilet at the end of the corridor, maybe a dart board). Dim lights. Slightly smoky atmosphere - is that a philosphy professor smoking weed in the corner? (it most certainly is if this is aberdeen university) - a surly barman slopping some drinks upon the counter-top. Drunken old chap singing to himself in the corner, a-tipping, a-tripping off his chairy-o m' Darlin' clementine. Small group of young guys (including myself), sitting at the bar - probably tipsy - heatedly arguing the general merits of jazz, blues and high literature. You'd think they were vampires when the door opens to admit some unsuspecting chump - they don't know what they're in for in this bar! - protecting the eyes from the light (it's midday or so). It's cold outside ... God's ears so it is! Necessity of overcoat and a good fur fedora.

Behind the 8 ball,..
I just talked to a friend of mine and he's getting a telescope for summer fun. I live within walking distance of my brother's house right on the shore of Lake Erie. So we will gather a few friends now and then and have a star party on the beach. :)
Something other than the bar scene which gets old quick.

Baron Kurtz: You Sir are obviously a patron of the student unions of yore from whence one could hear cries of "Here be dragons!". And apart from the anti smoking laws it probably hasn't changed much..

I'm not a big fan of big get-togethers -- when I was married, we used to host a big end-of-the-holiday-season party every January, packing 75 people into our apartment, and it was an awful pain. There was never time to really talk to people, and it felt more like running an obstacle course than anything fun. Never again.

So for me, a small group going out to see a movie and then adjourning to a lunchroom or a pub for a quick bite to eat, and sitting around gabbing is my idea of a really pleasant evening. Or just a simple get-together over lunch and then a trip out shopping, like PSG and I had a couple weeks ago -- either way, it's all about good food, good friends, good fun!

Being home myself tonight with a bum hand :( this is a good thread. I'm a hostess. I enjoy having people over, feeding them, having some drinks, watching a good movie or playing a few games. When out, I like a nice lounge, with good music and friends. A good date to me is having a nice dinner then walking or driving around the city. Actually have a date tomorrow (bandaged hand and all) and this is what we will do.

Caledonia -
Ski party in Sun Valley would be perfect! There is the old lodge up top and the Inn for evenings. Last time I was there it was still in shape, and had old photographs of its golden era visitors on the walls. They may even still have a band. During the day, when not skiing or taking a sleigh ride, people can go to the Movies where they are playing "Sun Valley Seranade" at all showings. Heaven.:eusa_clap

Scott - Could you book me a table?
