Chicago: Sopranos

In Chicago there is a restaurant called Sopranos on Sheffield, about a block North of Diversey.

There is a mix of Italian comfort food and "real" Italian food and a good wine list.

It was open long before the HBO series, so you won't be greeted by cardboard cutouts of James Gandolfini on arrival. It does, however has pictures of Sinatra, Pacino, and, oddly enough, Einstein in the main dining room.

It is also reasonably priced.

Thank you, gents.
Just a few addresses and hints.

In Bologna:

De Ercola, Piazza Minghetti.
A local, typical restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner.
Great, local atmosphere. Low prices and high quality.

Trattoria Gianni, Via Clavature.
Fantastic,familyowned and familydriven restaurant.
hard to find - down an alley.
Booking needed allways full.
Our favourite in Bologna!!!!!

Just 20 minutes from our house in the Chianti Mountains:
Badia a Coltibuono. Near Radda in Chianti
Fantastic restaurant with a magnificant view.
Besides the restaurant, they produce some of the best Chianti wine.
(2004 got 3 glasses - which is max - in Gambero Rosso - The official Italian wineguide 2007)
The restaurant is in a old monastery. They run their own cookingschool and do some really impressive meals. A great mixture between the Italian tradition and creativity.
See more at www.coltibuono.com

For the afternoone coffe or gelatte:
Cafe Poliziano in the center of Montepulciano is a must!

Enjoy!
And have a great trip, Speedster!!!!!

Lamedecine... what I would give to be walking back up Aoyama-dori.

I went to school in Tokyo (ASIJ, and St.Mary's).

Italians....

My local... Pellicis in and of Bethnal Green, on Bethnal Green High Road.

Run by the Pellicis originally of Lucca. Great people, vibe, and they take care of us locals.

(I'm also hoping Nevio Pellici will help me get a place in Bagni de Lucca!!)

'Olive Garden'? Anyone else?

Just kidding...

My mom's Sicilian. I haven't yet found the restaurant that beats her kitchen. Granted, there are a lot of places mentioned above that I haven't tried yet.

For anyone in or near central Ohio, there's a family run restaurant on the far east side called Scali's. Mr. Scali is the owner and chef. His wife manages the place and greats you with a beautiful smile at the door. His mother makes all of the salads. The food is fantastic. I've never had anything bad there, and I've tried it all. The wine menu varies depending upon what Mr. Scali has found recently to offer his guests. Call for reservations. or be prepared to wait. It seats about 75 people, and is always full.

If you are in the south jersey area a little place in Hammonton called Marcello's. From the outside looks like an average pizza joint, nothing special that would make you try it. Their meals are the best around. Many people make this a stop on their way to Atlantic City from Philly.

Italian bread

In the same vein, does anyone know of a place to get great Italian bread in central new jersey? I used to love going to Demarco's in Matawan, but I don't live near there anymore. They have wonderful bread and I have never found another place on par with them. I tried a new place masquerading as an Italian deli, but the bread was expensive and tasted like they forgot the salt or any other sort of flavoring! :eusa_doh:
