What do people wear in American Canyon? Not everybody buys their clothes from the big Wal*Mart. It's still in The Bay Area, and close enough to San Francisco, that anyone who wanted to could find decent clothes to wear. I've got a buddy that lives out there. I can remember when that area wasn't developed like it is today, and we used to go out there to hunt & shoot.

I wear my issue Cooper A2 frequently along with Nomex issue and several others. I'm a jacket hound though.

I actually had a guy at work crack a joke about my Flightjackets A-2 which I've had for a decade now. Some people just follow the trends and have no idea what a quality leather jacket actually looks like. Wool coats are king now hence I see a decent A-2 probably once every two years.

I have a Cockpit A-2 made from horsehide. It is the traditional cut. Mine is size 50, and there still isn't enough room across the back. I normally wear a 48 suit, and this jacket strains whenever I raise my arms or reach for the handlebars.

I have a G1 flight jacket. I wear it daily. Its the warmest jacket I have. It looks good in just about anything. I always get compliments about it.

Interesting question and observation. I agree that military and bomber style jackets have fallen out of favor. Back in the 80's and 90's, they were quite popular. Even many of my motorcycling pals have stopped wearing leathers and prefer engineered synthetic jackets. They offer wind resistance, water resistance, heat, comfort, ruggedness and a stylish good look.
With the advent of super high tech well designed synthetic jackets, the general public appears to currenly be wearing these state of the art jackets rather than vintage leather.
I suspect that like everything else, this is a fashion cycle and the military style jacket will be rediscovered and popularized at some point.

I suppose when the original utility and flight jackets were designed leather, wool and shearling were the most high-performance materials going. Sure the new 'high-tech' synthetics are light and comfortable but I wouldn't fancy 'going down the road' wearing anything but leather. But most importantly leather looks a hell of a lot better!

Interesting how fashion can be sold as practicality.

Leather is never going to be the perfect high-tech material, but it doesn't score too badly at all on the criteria you list. It's not a stylish look to you if it says "80s" - but to many, it's timeless.

Marketers are crafty SOBs. Even supposedly down-to-earth types like cyclists will follow a trend if you can convince them it's progress and not marketing. Technology itself can come off as a style.
