Wool felt goes back many hundreds of years, and hats were among the first things constructed of it.
They are not necessarily bad, as an American Revolutionary War Tri-Corner in good condition would be worth a small fortune, as are the "Johnny Reb" caps from the Civil War.
I have a loden green Dorfman Pacific crushable fedora of wool felt that I rake leave in and hike in in awful weather. Though it's 12 years old and has been through hell, it still looks 95% as good as the day I bought it and just refuses to die. So I keep on wearing it when I need a hat I really don't care about getting messy. I'm doing my best to trash it, but I have this thing about keeping everything I own in tip-top condition, and so it lives on.
Even so, if you've made it to this site, I wouldn't recommend buying a wool felt hat. A new one's gonna cost you at least $50, and for about twice that you can purchase a truly fine pure fur felt hat like an Akubra that is MUCH better. Smart thing to do is to not throw your money away on wool but save up and get a hat you can really be proud of
I do not find fault with those who wear a wool felt hat, as the vast majority simply have not learned that a good fur felt one is far better, so I just try to educate them. A wool felt hat is like a gateway drug for those who do not yet know about the good stuff.
