I don't see enough Paul Newman love in this thread. But I can't decide WHICH of his movies, either.

I like your sig, what is that from?

Many MANY moons ago I knew a guy on a BBS who used it. I appropriated it from him. :)

Edit: Actually, for curiosity I just googled it and it is floating around quite a bit in a number of forms...

Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This was a pivotal film in my life. As a boy, I grew up with the old movies on channel 9 at 4:30 in th eafternoon because my mom had them on after the soaps. I was exposed to all the classics and the fedoras in them. Everyone wore hats.

I also loved superheroes, especially Batman and Spiderman. They appealed to me for the same reasons that Superman did not - because they had weaknesses, especially Batman. I was also, bion, a big fan of natural earthiness. Most of my belongs were not in pristine condition, and I took pride in the rugged look of stuff I had, such as bicycles, baseball gloves, etc.

Through the 1970s, action movies began to take on a change. They started to become more gritty and realistic-looking, at least to me. I remember seeing The French Connection and it blew me away. Bullitt, Serpico, and Death Wish all had me riveted.

So, when Raiders came out, it was a coming together of these likes of mine. The old times, the clothes, that hat, the vehicles, the suspense, the grit, the cliff-hangerness of some of the situations, the pacing, the way Ford played the character, the music, the overall historic look of the film - ah, what can I say? That movie is my favorite movie, and has been since it was released.

Nice selections, Chas.

I have stayed off this thread because I no longer believe in making lists of favorites, much less trying to choose one. As a lifelong movie buff, it's just impossible... Back when I was in my early twenties, maybe I could have made a list. But now, in my mid-fifties, when I have seen and loved thousands of films, I really can't.

Sorry if this is out of step with our obsessed-with-declaring-ultimate-best-ofs-and-making-endless-lists culture, but honestly, I have never been governed by what's considered usual in our culture!

Then break out the carbon paper of your early-twenties list; it'd be fascinating to know what "young you" liked. :D

The list will never end...Dr. Strange is most correct - my favorites this year will probably not be my favorites in five years. In five years, I think my favorite war movie would probably be "The Hurt Locker".

Favorite Gangster/Crime film: Scarface (1932)(loathe the Pacino remake)

Favorite Comedy: Monty Python's "Life Of Brian" barely edges out "Holy Grail"

Now, normally I don't like Biopics. But this one nailed the concept.

Just wondering...What is your ONE...alltime favorite movie? No fair giving your fav in different catagories or themes. Just...PICK ONE. lol

Mine is the European/extended version of first Highlander. Yes..not an award winner or perhaps even highly thought of...but...just my fav.
Just in case folks haven't read the first post ;)

I agree that is impossible for a film buff to pick one favorite movie. I certainly can't. However, I can say that there is one movie that I use to judge all others. Lawrence of Arabia has a sweeping, epic story, stellar performances, and some of the finest cinematography in the history of film. It is my yardstick from which to measure all other cinema.

Interestingly (especially in relation to the OP) the movie I use for the opposite end of the scale is Highlander II.

I don't really know if I have a favorite actor, there are so many who are good in so many different roles.

Favorite movie is tough as well, but if I had to pick, I would say Field of Dreams.

It truly speaks to the connection between father and son.

Ok, here's ONE of my all-time favorites:
Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House

So there!
Got to agree. Probably my #1 all time favorite. Especially love all the pipe smoking (being a pipeman/pipemaker myself), the era, the style, the story (built several homes - nothings changed), the humor, the whole cozy feel of the film. And the acting, Grant, Douglas and Loy. How can you lose.

I watch it several times a year, sometimes just certain scenes.

Great movie. I think I'll watch it tonight!
