Whats this shape? Levinson?

Information on this strange hat.

Hey guys, I just received an eBay special that I took a shot on. It's labeled a Courtney Royalten Quality on the liner, has "Royaltan Dupont Process Water Repellent and "Controlled Brim" on one side, "Harry Levinson Your Hatter, Indianapolis-Evansville" on the other side of the sweat. Black, with black binding and ribbon, 2 3/4" brim, 5 1/2" crown. I needed a black hat, and this is exactly as it was labeled, a 7 3/4. I need to find a way to flange the brim, which is rippled, but otherwise, all is in great shape. Nowhere does it say if it's fur felt, but I'm assuming it is. Any info on all this nomenclature? The spec card has a price of $17.95, so I'm guessing it's old. Any further information on this felt quality would be appreciated. Excuse my poor photos, I suck at taking pix of black hats. A price of $17.95 is a pretty good price! That has to be before the 70s, wouldn't you think? Anyway, that is a nice hat and it looks like its in good shape.

Nice looking lid - interesting it says 'Royalten Quality' on the lining but 'Royaltan' on the sweatband. Typo?
Love that lining and the 'Controlled Brim' logo.

Thanks boys. Any info on the DuPont Process Water Repellant, or guesses as to when this hat was made? The sweatband is remarkably new, whole hat looks to have been kept in a box most of its life. Was shipped in a neat old Resistol hatbox with a plastic belt and buckle fastener on top. The wonky and hard to shape brim makes me wonder what the hell they meant by "Controlled Brim," but I expect I'll get it worked out eventually. Frank

See the Courtney thread that RLK references above. I have noted the patent number for the controlled brim on my Royalten. You can go read about the construction in the patent.

(If I remember correctly, the DuPont process was mainly used by the Frank H. Lee hats, so it may be that this could have been made in their factory - at one time they made OEM hats for a lot of labels (including Adam Hats) .

It's a nice looking hat, not sure of gae, but I'd hazard a guess at early-mid 60's.

Anyone know what this style hat is? Also, when was Harry Levinson in business? I cant find any history on him. Trying to date this hat. It is pristine. Love the wind trolley. Thanks for any info.

Well it's an open crown hat with noticeable taper. I suppose that could be its intended shape, same idea as the "Boss of the Plains" look; or perhaps it was left to the buyer to crease/bash the crown. Apparently back in the day many if not most hats were delivered open crown for individualization purposes ~ ditto for my latest acquisitions of current production being an Akubra Campdraft & a Stetson Premiere Stetsonian which came open crown.

The hat is probably from the 1940's -195's. They are not in business anymore. You can Google information about them.
