What's the point of Taper?

I asked this over on COW, but on second thought maybe you guys might be more knowledgable.

I have a Raider's AB with the typical tight pinch. This model does not have a taper in the crown and to my eye does not. But the combination of tight pinch and high crown I'm concerned it makes my head look a little TOO big.

Since I have a freakishly large head anyway, 7 3/4, I went ahead and ordered another AB, this time with the TOD Bridge Scene bash, because I understand that this style hat has a smaller crown and relaxed pinch. It does however taper.

My question though is this: What affect does a taper in the crown produce? Will it make a long face appear shorter and more in proportion, or longer and out of proportion?

Thanks.

Don't let Patterson read that. He'll get quite upset.
If you have a look through the first page of this section of the forum, somewhere somebody linked to a very helpful page - I think on Miller's website - showing different face shapes and the hats that work better with them. It makes for a really interesting read, and is fun to refer to whilst playing around with a hat in front of a mirror.

Sorry I can't give you the link itself (bit pressed), but if you search for Miller it might show up, otherwise maybe some other kind FL member can re-link.

You know, there's a whole world of hats beyond the Indy fedora... and many of them are tapered! There's nothing wrong with a tapered crown, once you get away from the whole going-for-the-Indy-look thing.

You're right, but at the same time, that shape does spoil you. I used to wear a very tapered hat I got in New Zealand, but after my Federation, anything that tapered makes my face look massive.
