whats the name/type of this hat?

is the brim size off depps hats wider than a "normal" wide brim?
One of the reasons it does look so wide is because the hat is made a couple sizes too large to fit down over the bandanna.

For comparison here are a couple of similar styled hats.

VS is 2-3/4" brim x 6" open crown

Gannon is a 3" brim with 5-1/2" open crown

Just had Johnny on the phone & he confirmed the brim on this particular western was 3.5" including the roll. Hope that clears up any conjecture.
I was going with 3-1/4 -- 3-1/2".

Hope you didn't wake him up!

I’m still kinda confused between the destiction between a pencil curl and kettle curl... are the terms interchangeable? I mean it’s a beautiful hat on here but is a kettle curl different than a pencil curl?

Great hat by the way

A pencil curl is smaller, tighter; like it was rolled on the radius of a pencil. A kettle curl is bigger, rolls over to be more rounded & rolled on a much bigger radius than a pencil. A kettle curl often involves a brim swoop also. DD & Moviehats both do excellent curls. Perhaps they can weigh in on how they make the differences.

The Shootist. Also with Jimmy Stewart, Lauren Bacall, and little Opie Cunningham.

John Wayne did 84 Westerns. So far Mr. Elliott has done 14. I like him, too, but there really is no comparison.

Yes I admit that John Wayne is an amazing icon and with great ideals ok and some talent. seriously though. I stand corrected... Sam Elliot is just one of the few great cowboy icons...
I saw John Wayne on a cd of Dean Martin show and he was amazing... talked about America and the army etc ... was a great show to watch

...who went on to star in American Grafitti which gave Charles Martin Smith his big break as Terry the Toad, who then went on to star as Ned Brookshire in Monte Walsh.

American Graffiti predated The Shootist by three years.

I don't see Mr. Smith listed as being in Monte Walsh. But it predates AG by three years. Maybe another movie? CMS's first credit is a 1969 ep of the Brady Bunch.

Sign of the times that they were active. I love Wayne but my top ten would also include Elliott, Selleck, Russell, Costner, Ben Johnson, the Carridines, the Keach's & it would be hard to stop at ten.

You should dig in and watch The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and a personal fave, Big Jake (Dog is my favorite character).
