thanx!

It’s just a fedora with a kettle curl brim treatment. There isn’t a special name for it. Any decent hatter can make you a facsimile.

Allright! Didn’t know it was called a kettle curl brim. And I guess he got a wide brim fedora. (Does he always wear wide brims?)

No specific name other than western with a pencil curl brim.

Closest "off the rack" hat would be Stetson's West Bound B
http://www.stetson.com/store/west-bound-b-5.html

Johnny's might be vintage because it's Johnny, but I suspect that's a custom job.

Here's two examples, one vintage, one modern.

side note: I've never been quite clear if "pencil roll" and "kettle curl" were interchangeable terms or not. I always considered the full roll of the top hat to be a kettle curl and the lower to be a pencil roll. I may or may not be correct in that. But most hatters should have the appropriate tool to do this.

Johnny is a hat fetichist & owns hundreds of 'em. The hat in the photo may be a ' Nick Fouquet' masterpiece so if you have a few grand to spare, you know where to go. :D

I’m not sure the hat in the photo is a western. It’s hard to tell from a photo, but it looks to be a softer hat. Of course what’s the distinction between a western and a fedora?

I’ve used the terms pencil roll and kettle curl interchangeably, but in my mind a pencil roll is tighter. No idea what the true definitions are.

It's generally the size of the hat, although various aspects of it are distinctive, as well. Band/ribbon width and/or material, pinch, brim and crown height.

I've seen western/cowboy hats that are in every way a fedora except the size of it - very wide brim and very tall crown - but otherwise have a wide grosgrain ribbon and fedora pinch.

There is no such thing as a N.F. "Masterpiece." Doesn't exist.

Ever hear the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes?" That marketing technique still works on the willing. Notice all the ripped and hole-ridden pants people wear today?

I tend to think our modern perception of where the line for how stiff westerns ought to be is thrown off by modern hats. Earlier open crown westerns would have been appreciably softer, even as they would have been relatively more stiff than the soft felt dress hats at the time.

I leaned toward "western" over "fedora" because proportions (I'm guestimating 6" crown, 3 3/4" curled brim) would put it well in line with the kinds of "stockman" hats in early Stetson catalogs, which delineated soft felt "dress hats" separately.

Justin was selling one such example recently.

In any event, don't know of many off the rack hats in those general proportions and with a brim curl. The aforementioned West Bound B and Akubra sombrero are the two that come to mind.

You also need to have a stiffer hat to support such large brims. I think my own confusion comes from ordering customs I don’t in any way consider westerns yet they have 6” open crowns and 3+” brims. It’s an arbitrary distinction, but I looked back at the Phoenix Hat and Rick said he only offered it in western weight in order for the hat to hold the brim curl. Western it is. :)
